  • Late Quaternary transgressions and regressions in the Trieste Gulf (north-eastern Adriatic Sea)

Open Access•Massimo Zecchin, Mauro Caffau et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

The integration of high-resolution seismic profiles, core data and radiocarbon plus U-Th datings, allows to document the late Quaternary succession of the Trieste Gulf, which represents the easternmost part of the northern Adriatic Sea. This succession consists of an alternation of shallow-marine and continental deposits organized to compose four transgressive-regressive sequences down to ca. 90 m below present sea level. The sequences terminate …

  • Continuity and Innovation in Pottery Technology

Open Access•F Bernardini, Manuela Montagnari Kokelj et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

This paper explores the development of pottery technology in the Trieste Karst region (North-East Italy) from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (EBA). It also seeks to identify cultural links with other areas by examining potentially imported vessels. Archaeometric analyses (X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy) reveal significant differences between Neolithic ceramics (Danilo–Vlaška Group) and the majority of Late Copper Age (LCA)/Early …

  • Whetstones from B ronze A ge Hill Forts of North‐Eastern I taly

Open Access•F Bernardini, Angelo De Min et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2015•Citada por: 3•Referências: 10

A group of B ronze A ge whetstones from protohistoric hill forts, locally called castellieri, of eastern F riuli V enezia G iulia (north‐eastern I taly) has been studied using different techniques, including non‐destructive methods such as X ‐ray computed microtomography and portable X ‐ray fluorescence, in order to characterize the raw material and define its origin. The obtained results suggest that small pebbles of reddish subarkose and quartz…

  • Mineralogical and Chemical Constraints on the Provenance of C opper A ge Polished Stone Axes of ‘Ljubljana Type’ from C aput A driae

Open Access•F Bernardini, Angelo De Min et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2014•Citada por: 6•Referências: 29

In this paper we show the results of a study concerning 42 axes, mainly discovered in the C opper A ge pile dwellings of L jubljansko barje (central S lovenia) and in the neighbouring areas of C aput A driae. The studied shaft‐hole axes, characterized by homogeneous typology but slightly different raw materials, have been called ‘ L jubljana‐type’ axes ( L t). The raw materials show a common OIB ‐like signature and metamorphic and spilitization f…

  • Petrographic and geochemical comparison between the Copper Age “Ljubljana type” axes and similar lithotypes from Eisenkappler Diabaszug complex (southern Austria)

  • Shaft‐hole Axes From Caput Adriae Made From Amphibole‐rich Metabasites

Open Access•F Bernardini, Angelo De Min et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•Citada por: 3•Referências: 12

Here we show the results of a study concerning a small group of shaft‐hole axes found in northeastern Italy, made from amphibole‐rich metabasites, fine‐grained and free of phenoblasts. The main mineral phases are amphibole, ranging from actinolite to hornblende, and plagioclase (An 10–15 and An 70–77 ). The amphiboles generally show a needle shape and are often radially arranged. Quartz is present in thin veinlets, while ilmenite is widespread in…

  • Synchrotron Ftir Micro-Spectroscopy Applied to the Study of Polished Serpentinite Artefacts

Open Access•F Bernardini, Diane Eichert et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Citada por: 3•Referências: 15

In prehistory, serpentinite was one of the most frequently used raw materials to produce polished stone artefacts. Several conventional analytical techniques can be applied to identify the serpentine minerals, but their application generally requires a powdered sample. This implies that the artefacts to be analysed must be damaged, and the possibility of analysing a mixture of different serpentine polytypes is high. The use of spatially resolved …
