Singing and Not Singing
In this article the author begins by looking at a crux in lines 11-12 of Frost’s poem: how can the oven bird “sing” and “not sing”? The author suggests that this is an example of antanaclasis: the bird sings in one sense but not in another. This, in turn, suggests a larger point: Frost’s oven bird can be understood as a bird/speaker/poet who sings (in the sense of producing utterances) without singing (in the sense of celebrating). Against the ba…
Differences in responsibility for child healthcare by parent gender
Voter Support for Policies Associated With Child Health as National Campaign Priorities
The study results suggest that most voters favor candidates who strongly support policies that are associated with child health. Voter support differs substantively by gender and political party affiliation and may be associated with language choices in messaging about policy change
Finding the Mind in the Eyes
This brief article focuses on “Yabu no Naka" ("In a Grove") by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. The author looks at the testimony of the samurai's wife, Masago, and indentifies some problems with her account of what happened
Don't Get Lost in Translation
Translation of developmental science discoveries is impeded by numerous barriers at different stages of the research-to-practice pipeline. Actualization of the vast potential of the developmental sciences to improve children's health and development in the real world is imperative but has not yet been fully realized. In this commentary, we argue that an integrated developmental-implementation sciences framework will result in a translational mind…
Parental Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy for children
The highest rates of hesitancy toward a future COVID-19 vaccine were found in demographic groups that have been the most severely affected by the pandemic. These groups may require targeted outreach efforts from trusted sources of information in order to promote equitable uptake of a future COVID-19 vaccine
Well-being of Parents and Children During the Covid-19 Pandemic
BACKGROUND: As the coronavirus disease pandemic spread across the United States and protective measures to mitigate its impact were enacted, parents and children experienced widespread disruptions in daily life. Our objective with this national survey was to determine how the pandemic and mitigation efforts affected the physical and emotional well-being of parents and children in the United States through early June 2020. METHODS: In June 2020, w…

Does Primary Care Provider Supply Influence Medicaid Acceptability
BACKGROUND: Following the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansions, access to care improved through elevated coverage rates among the low-income population. In Michigan, a major factor contributing to improved access among low-income patients was increased Medicaid acceptance in primary care settings. OBJECTIVES: Prior evidence shows substantial geographic variation preacceptance and postacceptance of Medicaid. In this study, we determine whethe…
Population-level factors associated with maternal mortality in the United States, 1997–2012
Our findings indicate that, in addition to better case ascertainment of maternal deaths, adverse changes in chronic diseases, insufficient healthcare access, and social determinants of health represent identifiable risks for maternal mortality that merit prompt attention in population-directed interventions and health policies
Expectant Fathers’ Presence at Prenatal Ultrasounds
There is substantial and growing evidence to demonstrate the importance of fathers to child development and the impact of fathers’ positive or negative involvement on the health and well-being of mothers and children (Feldman, Bamberger, & Kanat-Maymon, 2013; Lamb, 2010; Lamb & Lewis, 2013), yet fathers remain underserved in parenting programs and many other domains of social work practice (Panter-Brick et al., 2014; Stahlschmidt, Threlfall, Seay…
The Affordable Care Act, Insurance Coverage, and Health Care Utilization of Previously Incarcerated Young Men
Objectives. To estimate health insurance and health care utilization patterns among previously incarcerated men following implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA’s) Medicaid expansion and Marketplace plans in 2014. Methods. We performed serial cross-sectional analyses using data from the National Survey of Family Growth between 2008 and 2015. Our sample included men aged 18 to 44 years with (n = 3476) and without (n = 8702) a history of …
Gender Role Beliefs and Parents' Support for Athletic Participation
Pay-to-play fees in public schools place more support for sport participation in the hands of parents; this may disproportionately affect the ability of girls to garner the benefits of sports. Using an online survey of a national sample of parents ( N = 814), we examined the relationship between parents' gender role beliefs, parents' beliefs about the benefits and monetary value of sports, and the types of sports their daughters play. The results…

Fidelity of Administrative Data When Researching Down Syndrome
OBJECTIVE: To compare the fidelity of administrative data with clinical data when researching Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: From outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department administrative claims within our institution, we identified 252 patients aged 18-45 years with encounters coded for DS by the ICD9=758.0 from 2000 to 2008. We evaluated these cases for false-positive errors-cases in which DS was not actually present in clinical descriptions…
Variation in Inpatient Tonsillectomy Costs Within and Between US Hospitals Attributable to Postoperative Complications
BACKGROUND: Tonsillectomy is the second most common inpatient procedure in US children. However, the factors that influence tonsillectomy-related costs are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to describe variation in US inpatient tonsillectomy costs and examine whether postoperative complications contribute to these disparities in costs. RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study of the 2009 Nationwide Inpatient Sample. …
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and Associated Health Care Expenditures
CONTEXT: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a postnatal drug withdrawal syndrome primarily caused by maternal opiate use. No national estimates are available for the incidence of maternal opiate use at the time of delivery or NAS. OBJECTIVES: To determine the national incidence of NAS and antepartum maternal opiate use and to characterize trends in national health care expenditures associated with NAS between 2000 and 2009. DESIGN, SETTING, AN…

A Comparison of In-hospital Mortality Risk Conferred by High Hospital Occupancy, Differences in Nurse Staffing Levels, Weekend Admission, and Seasonal Influenza
BACKGROUND: Hospital occupancy, nurse staffing levels, weekend admission, and seasonal influenza have all been shown to be associated with in-hospital mortality. Yet, no study has simultaneously compared the strength of associations of these 4 factors with in-hospital mortality. OBJECTIVE: To compare the risk of in-hospital mortality conferred by high hospital occupancy on admission, increased nurse staffing levels, weekend admission, and seasona…
What about the children? The experience of families involved in an adult-focused diabetes intervention
Objective Among adults with diabetes attempting to change their own diets, we explored how these adults approached providing food for their children and how their children reacted to dietary changes in the household. Design The research design used semi-structured parallel individual interviews of adults and a child (aged 10–17 years) in their home. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, coded and analysed for themes. Subjects Subjects include…

Childhood Vaccine Purchase Costs in the Public Sector
Objectives. We examined recent public-sector trends in childhood vaccine costs and estimated future costs. Methods. We used public-sector price data to calculate vaccine purchase cost per child for children aged 0 to 6 years from 1975 to 2001. We fit a linear regression model to historical data and then used it to project costs per child from 2002 to 2020, adjusted to 2001 US dollars. Results. Controlling for inflation, the cost of vaccine purcha…
Problems of Health Service for Negroes
Is the care of Negro health a medical problem, an economic problem, or a race problem? If it is a mixture, in what proportions are its elements compounded? As a medical problem, sickness and its care among Negroes are very much the same as the corresponding problem among whites. Some important diseases differ in relative frequency. But in the large, the medical problems of Negroes and of whites are different in emphasis, not in kind. Both groups …
