Rural Labour Market Developments, Agricultural Productivity, and Real Wages in Bangladesh, 1950-2006
This paper provides an overview of recent developments in rural labour markets in Bangladesh and also examines the trends and movements of agricultural productivity and real wages with annual data for the period 1950-2006. The paper links the movements of agricultural real wages to macroeconomic developments in general and agricultural development in particular. As part of empirical investigation, the paper develops a simple model of agricultural…
Anatomy of creeping authoritarianism in Bangladesh
This paper offers a critical analysis of creeping authoritarianism in Bangladesh’s culture and politics. Political events since the 1940s that have shaped the presently unstable state of Bangladesh’s society are interpreted specifically in terms of their cultural and political significance. One important aspect of this unstable political state is the ongoing search for Bangladeshi national identity. Accordingly, the paper seeks to answer the ques…
Islamism, secularism and post-Islamism
This paper provides a historical overview of the emerging post-Islamist phenomenon in the Muslim world and discusses the scope for sustainable democratic politics in Bangladesh. In the process, a model is proposed that purports to exhibit a level of compatibility with the perceived political landscape in Bangladesh. The model adopts a version of the Hotelling–Downs principle of democracy and sets it within the 'post-Islamist' paradigm in such a w…
Contested National Identity and Political Crisis in Bangladesh
This paper develops the theme that the ongoing political polarization and political crisis in Bangladesh since its independence from Pakistan in 1971 reflect the fundamental weaknesses of the pillars of Bangladeshi society and national identity. The paper adopts an historical approach to explain why and how Muslim nationalism, which was the basis for the establishment of Pakistan, has re-emerged in contemporary Bangladeshi society and politics an…
Islamic Resurgence in Bangladesh's Culture and Politics
In Bangladesh, the resurgence of Islam is not synonymous with Islamic militancy. Islamic militancy grew in frequency and intensity between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s, but as a transitory phenomenon on the periphery of Bangladeshi life and society. It arose for two main reasons. First, it is the predictable outcome of the sustained misgovernance of the Bangladeshi state. It is predictable in a Muslim-majority country that some of the militant…

Macroeconomic Policies and Agricultural Terms of Trade, Bangladesh, 1952-2005
Agricultural prices in Bangladesh have had a tendency to rise at a faster rate than industrial prices since the early 1950s. The resulting rising trend in the agricultural terms of trade has been pronounced since the mid-1980s when Bangladesh introduced IMF- and World Bank-supported deregulatory economic reforms. This rising trend in the agricultural terms of trade is inconsistent with the Prebisch-Singer thesis in the context of domestic economy…
Hindu–Muslim separateness in Bengal
Although the Indian media’s claim that Bangladesh is well on the way to becoming a ‘failed state’ is not consistent with the latter’s economic, social and political record since 1971, it makes sense when such propaganda is interpreted as part of an Indian strategy to undermine Bangladesh’s existence as a sovereign nation. Starting from this assumption, the present paper argues that the re-emergence of a prominent Islamic theme within the matrix o…

Macroeconomic Policies and Problems in Bangladesh During the Mujib Regime
Macroeconomic Policies and Problems in Bangladesh During the Mujib Regime (1972–1975)
This paper critically examines the macroeconomic policies and problems in Bangladesh during the Mujib regime. It shows that most macroeconomic policies of the Mujib government were driven by politics, rather than ideology. Inflation and trade deficits were the two major macroeconomic problems that Bangladesh experienced during the Mujib period. Available evidence suggests that they were caused by both expansionary macroeconomic policies of the go…

Determinants of current account balances of Bangladesh
This article analyses the developments of current account balances of Bangladesh since the 1950s. Available evidence suggests that the loss of the Indian raw jute market in the 1950s and the arrival of jute substitutes in the international market in the 1960s have had lasting impacts on the current account position of Bangladesh. An empirical investigation of the effects of external factors on the current account balances of Bangladesh for the 19…
