  • Dietary habits of Byzantine Kovuklukaya (Sinop, Türkiye)

Open Access•K Özdemir, Yu Itahashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2025

Introduction During the medieval period, cultural attitudes toward leprosy often involved the exclusion of infected people from general society. People suffering from leprosy were often moved to live in separate places such as a specific district, village, or hospital. Such actions are social implications of how the disease and its sufferers were viewed and dealt with. This study aims to investigate whether Kovuklukaya was inhabited by segregated…

  • Biogeochemical Approaches to Bioarchaeological Research in Turkey

    Benjamin Irvine, K Özdemir•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2020

Bone chemical composition (particularly utilizing isotopes) analysis was a relatively late bloomer, beginning in the early 2000s and only gathering pace in the last five to ten years. Trace element analysis had actually commenced in the 1980s, however, with a hiatus until its resurgence in the last decade. Currently, research into dietary habits, subsistence practices, and mobility has focused on early proto-sedentary and sedentary agricultural p…

    Open Access•K Özdemir, Ö D Erdal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Referências: 4

In 2003, a tall skeleton belonging to a young adult individual was recovered from a post‐medieval cemetery situated north‐east of the modern city of Erzurum, Turkey. The sex of the individual was not possible to determine. The predicted stature values range from 182 to 200 cm with the average 188.94 cm. The growth was proportional on almost all bones, except for the cranial and facial bones. The selected metric data were compared with the mean va…

  • A Case of Ancient Bladder Stones from Oluz Höyük, Amasya, Turkey

Open Access•K Özdemir, Ali Akın Akyol et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Referências: 39

A biological object was recovered from the pelvic region of an adult woman coded to SK13 unearthed from Oluz Höyük in Amasya, Turkey. The skeleton was dated to the medieval period on the basis of the burial customs and the calibrated 14C dates. The find was identified as a bladder stone on morphological, radiographic and chemo-analytical grounds with the help of X-ray diffraction, polarised energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, confo…
