Awareness of Racial and Ethnic Bias and Potential Solutions to Address Bias With Use of Health Care Algorithms
This qualitative study found that participants perceived widespread and increasing use of algorithms in health care and lack of oversight, potentially exacerbating racial and ethnic inequities. Increasing awareness for clinicians and patients and standardized, transparent approaches for algorithm development and implementation may be needed to address racial and ethnic biases related to algorithms
Measuring Multimorbidity
BACKGROUND: Adults have a higher prevalence of multimorbidity-or having multiple chronic health conditions-than having a single condition in isolation. Researchers, health care providers, and health policymakers find it challenging to decide upon the most appropriate assessment tool from the many available multimorbidity measures. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe a broad range of instruments and data sources available to ass…
Prioritizing Evidence-based Interventions for Dissemination and Implementation Investments
BACKGROUND: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is mandated to implement patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) to promote safer, higher quality care. With this goal, we developed a process to identify which evidence-based PCOR interventions merit investment in implementation. We present our process and experience to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AHRQ developed and applied a systematic, transparent, and stakeholder-driven proc…
Cancer screening behaviours among South Asian immigrants in the UK, US and Canada
South Asian (SA) immigrants settled in the United Kingdom (UK) and North America [United States (US) and Canada] have low screening rates for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers. Incidence rates of these cancers increase among SA immigrants after migration, becoming similar to rates in non-Asian native populations. However, there are disparities in cancer screening, with low cancer screening uptake in this population. We conducted a scoping s…
Using decision trees for measuring gender equity in the timing of angiography in patients with acute coronary syndrome
A technique developed expressly for measuring equity suggests that men and women in Ontario receive equitable care in access to angiography with respect to timeliness following an ACS
Sex Differences in Home Care Performance
Single item measures of self-rated mental health
BACKGROUND: A single-item measure of self-rated mental health (SRMH) is being used increasingly in health research and population health surveys. The item asks respondents to rate their mental health on a five-point scale from excellent to poor. This scoping study presents the first known review of the SRMH literature. METHODS: Electronic databases of Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Cochrane Reviews were searched using keywords. The databas…
Women's strategies to achieve access to healthcare in Ontario, Canada
As part of a mixed methods study on women's access to the healthcare system in Ontario, Canada, we undertook a qualitative meta-synthesis to better understand the contextual conditions under which women access healthcare. An earlier phase of the synthesis demonstrated a series of factors that complicate women's access to healthcare in Ontario. Here, we consider women's agency in responding to these factors. We used meta-study methods to synthesis…
Marital Formation and Infidelity
Research increasingly shows that religion is a potent resource for family functioning, but less research has examined how religion may influence marital infidelity. Marital fidelity is important to examine because it is a critical aspect of healthy functioning within marriage. In this research, we examine how the use of religion as a basis for marital formation is related to the probability of subsequent sexual infidelity using a probability samp…
Apsa Congressional Fellowship Program Office Assignments
Founded in 1953, the APSA Congressional Fellowship Program is the nation's oldest and most prestigious congressional fellowship. More than fifty years later, the program remains devoted to its original objective of expanding knowledge and awareness of Congress. For nine months, select political scientists, journalists, doctors, federal executives and international scholars gain “hands on” understanding of the legislative process by serving on con…
Beyond Barriers in Studying Disparities in Women's Access to Health Services in Ontario, Canada
Women live within complex and differing social, economic, and environmental circumstances that influence options to seek health care. In this article we report on a metasynthesis of qualitative research concerning access disparities for women in the Canadian province of Ontario, where there is a publicly funded health care system. We took a metastudy approach to analysis of results from 35 relevant qualitative articles to understand the condition…
Pain and Depression in Late Life
This study suggests that a synthesis of stress process and life course perspectives is critical for understanding how pain influences depression in late life. However, research that does not comprehensively control for time-stable factors may overestimate the consequences of pain for older adults
Gender Differences in Stroke Care and Outcomes in Ontario
Timing, Social Support, and the Effects of Physical Limitations on Psychological Distress in Late Life
The contribution of this research is to offer a more nuanced view of the mental health consequences of physical limitations in late life by demonstrating that perceived social support provides an important context for age-variegated associations between ADL limitations and changes in psychological distress
Association of Health Plans' Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (Hedis) Performance With Outcomes of Enrollees With Diabetes
BACKGROUND: Few quality of care evaluations examine the relationship between clinical processes and patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between health plan performance on Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) clinical processes and intermediate outcome measures and Health Outcomes Survey (HOS) self-reported physical and mental health scores among Medicare plan enrollees with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN: Sec…
Marital Status as Contingency for the Effects of Neighborhood Disorder on Older Adults' Mental Health
This research contributes to the study of aging and health by demonstrating that neighborhood conditions continue to affect mental health well into late life by shaping older adults' mastery, but a social connection to a marital partner helps mitigate these effects
Potentially Inappropriate Prescribing for the Elderly
BACKGROUND: Many studies have identified patient characteristics associated with potentially inappropriate prescribing in the elderly (PIPE), however, little attention has been directed toward how health care system factors such as geriatric care may affect this patient safety issue. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association between geriatric care and PIPE in a community dwelling elderly population. RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional retrospec…
Does Quality of Care for Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes Differ by Gender for Enrollees in Managed Care Plans
Gender Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease Care Among Commercial and Medicare Managed Care Plans
Gender Disparities in the Quality of Cardiovascular Disease Care in Private Managed Care Plans
Predictors of Voluntary Disenrollment From Medicare Managed Care
BACKGROUND: Prior research on selection bias in Medicare plans has demonstrated favorable enrollment of healthier beneficiaries, resulting in plan overpayment. However, total selection bias depends not only on who enrolls, but also on who disenrolls. Few studies examine selectivity in disenrollment; it is unclear how those who leave plans differ from those who remain. OBJECTIVE: The examination of health status and plan characteristics as potenti…
Religious Activities and Changes in the Sense of Divine Control
Using data from adults age 65 and older in the District of Columbia and two adjoining counties in Maryland, we examine the effects of the frequency of religious attendance and prayer on changes in the sense of divine control. We also examine the role of two core dimensions of social stratification— race and socioeconomic status (SES)—as contingencies. We observe that race and SES independently modify the effects of religious activities on changes…
