Family Dinner Quality and Adolescent Substance Use
Family dinner quality (i.e. family interactions) is associated with lower adolescent substance use (SU). This study examined whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) moderate this relationship. Online survey data were collected from 2090 U.S. adolescents (ages 12–17) and their parents (10/2021–02/2022). Measures included the Family Dinner Index (0–6), ACEs (0 = none, 1–3 = low-to-moderate, ≥4 = high), and past 6-month alcohol, vaping, and can…
Understanding the knowledge gap in parents’ and teens’ perceptions of cannabis laws
As recreational cannabis becomes legalized, parents and teens may keep up with these changing laws differently, resulting in knowledge gaps in their understanding of this topic. This study aimed to explore parents’ and teens’ knowledge of cannabis legalization in Massachusetts when the law was being implemented in 2018. Interviews were conducted with 42 parents and teens (08/2018-07/2019) to assess their knowledge of cannabis laws, teens’ access …
Opioid prescriber screening practices to detect risk for developing opioid use disorder
Little is known about how clinical providers assess risk for opioid use disorder (OUD), especially when considering prescriptions for opioid-naïve patients with acute pain. While formal screening tools exist, they are not widely used, and may not be sensitive enough to identify low-risk individuals who are susceptible to developing an OUD. Therefore, we sought to understand opioid prescribers' perspectives on their screening practices. We conduct…
Spatial and Nonspatial Factors Associated with Access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder among Pregnant Women in Massachusetts
INTRODUCTION: In Massachusetts, one-third of pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD) do not receive medications for OUD (MOUD), such as buprenorphine and methadone. Research has demonstrated that broadly, access to medications differs by location and by socioeconomic and geographic characteristics of communities, but a comprehensive understanding at the micro-level is lacking. This study aims to identify and characterize access to MOUD trea…
Qualitative Comparison of Barriers to Antiretroviral Medication Adherence Among Perinatally and Behaviorally HIV-Infected Youth
Medication adherence among youth living with HIV (28%-69%) is often insufficient for viral suppression. The psychosocial context of adherence barriers is complex. We sought to qualitatively understand adherence barriers among behaviorally infected and perinatally infected youth and develop an intervention specific to their needs. We conducted in-depth interviews with 30 youth living with HIV (aged 14-24 years) and analyzed transcripts using the c…
Differences in Adolescent Substance Use by Hispanic Subgroup
Differences in health outcomes on the basis of racial and/or ethnic group membership have been documented among Hispanics in the US. As this heterogeneous population continues to grow, so does the importance of understanding the subgroups within it and the possible effect that between-group variations may have on health outcomes. This article highlights a major limitation of the existing research: that the Hispanic population is almost exclusivel…
Brands matter
The findings presented here suggests that brand-level alcohol research will provide important insight into youth drinking behaviors, the factors that contribute to youth alcohol consumption, and potential avenues for effective public health surveillance and programming
Moderate Levels of Depression Predict Sexual Transmission Risk in HIV-Infected MSM
Are Family Meals as Good for Youth as We Think They Are? A Review of the Literature on Family Meals as They Pertain to Adolescent Risk Prevention
Patterns of Substance Use Among a Large Urban Cohort of HIV-Infected Men Who Have Sex With Men in Primary Care
Problematic alcohol use and HIV risk among Black men who have sex with men in Massachusetts
This analysis was designed to explore the frequency of problem drinking and its role in potentiating HIV risk among a community-recruited sample of Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in Massachusetts. Black MSM (n=197) recruited via modified respondent-driven sampling between January and July 2008 completed an interviewer-administered survey, including HIV sexual behavior, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the …
Demonstration and Evaluation of a Peer-Delivered, Individually-Tailored, HIV Prevention Intervention for HIV-Infected MSM in their Primary Care Setting
Clinically Significant Depressive Symptoms as a Risk Factor for HIV Infection Among Black MSM in Massachusetts
Study participation as a social group influencing sexual behaviours in an HIV-prevention trial for men who have sex with men
Perceived group membership, perceptions about accompanying group norms and the degree to which a person identifies with a social group are predictive of a wide range of human behaviours. Behavioural clinical trials in general, and HIV-prevention intervention trials in particular, however, have not examined the degree to which individuals who join a large behavioural study (and hence, a group) may, in an unanticipated way, develop a sense of socia…
Differential HIV Risk Behavior among Men who have Sex with Men Seeking Health-Related Mobile Van Services at Diverse Gay-Specific Venues
Town-Level Characteristics and Smoking Policy Adoption in Massachusetts
Objectives. We identified and quantified differences in sociodemographic characteristics of communities relative to the strength of local restaurant smoking regulations in Massachusetts. Methods. We examined the relationship between the strength of the 351 local restaurant smoking regulations in Massachusetts and a number of town-level characteristics, using a multinomial logistic regression model. Results. Characteristics important to the adopti…
The descriptive epidemiology of local restaurant smoking regulations in Massachusetts
Despite the widespread adoption of local restaurant smoking regulations in Massachusetts, the majority of restaurant customers and workers remain unprotected from secondhand smoke exposure. In light of this, public health practitioners must stop compromising the protection of customers and workers from secondhand smoke exposure in restaurants
