A large-scale concurrent validity study is described in which 321 first-level management employees in a Canadian provincial telephone company were given a comprehensive assessment battery and were rated on their work performance. Measures from five assessment domains-cognitive abilities, personality/motivational traits, administrative skills, biodata, and supervisory judgment were administered in one-day assessment sessions. Independent assessmen…
Management Selection by Multiple-Domain Assessment
The utility of a multiple-domain assessment approach to management selection was examined in detail. On the basis of concurrent validity results obtained in a recent large-scale validity study by the present authors, the issue of utility, or concrete gains, that the participating organization would realize was investigated from a number of different perspectives and through use of several different utility models. In addition, some new procedures…
Validity of a Large-Scale Assessment Battery in an Industrial Setting
This article contains a description of a validity study carried out with 238 employees of a large telephone company. Cognitive ability tests, including measures of general intelligence, reading, writing, vocabulary, quantitative ability, and two divergent production abilities, were given. Two personality inventories, the CPI and 16PF, were employed. Two administrative-skills measures derived from a locally-constructed In-Basket exercise completed…

Development and Application of a Quickly-Scored In-Basket Exercise in an Organizational Setting
This article contains a description of the development of an In-Basket exercise designed to be scored quickly by unsophisticated workers. Results are presented of a study using this In-Basket exercise, along with other measures, in a large-scale industrial setting to predict first-level supervisory performance. Reliability results suggested that the two scored dimensions of this exercise possess adequate reliability for most purposes. Correlation…
Research and Practice in Counseling
A long-standing problem confronting counselor educators is the antagonism of counseling students toward research. In this article the author presents the thesis that a major source of the practitioner-researcher split is the conflict of values between the underlying assumptions of the traditional methods of research and theories of counseling. Scientific methods have often been narrowly interpreted in counseling. The emphasis in research has thus…
Validity Studies Using the Comprehensive Ability Battery (CAB)
Results of two studies are presented in which university-level examinees were administered certain tests of the Comprehensive Ability Battery (CAB). In the first study, 71 male and 95 female university freshmen were given six CAB tests— V, N, Sp, I, Ma, and Cf. Year-end course grades in six subject areas were obtained for use as criteria, and two averages were computed for this purpose as well. The six CAB tests, along with four linear composites…
