Evaluating the Evidence for Lunar Calendars in Upper Palaeolithic Parietal Art
In this paper, we examine the lunar calendar interpretation to evaluate whether it is a viable explanation for the production of Upper Palaeolithic parietal art. We consider in detail the history of this approach, focusing on recently published variations on this interpretation. We then discuss the scientific method and whether these recent studies are designed to address the research questions necessary to test a lunar calendar hypothesis. More …
Little Statisticians in the Forest of Tales
A new trend has been swelling in the ocean of comparative mythology. Different research has been carried out using statistics to reconstruct the (pre)history of myths and mythological motifs (replicable episodes of traditional narratives) and to understand how they have evolved. The results obtained by using these different approaches converge and make it possible to intertwine numerous strands of evidence. We will try to summarize it in this pap…
First cross dating (U/Th-14C) of calcite covering rock paintings in Africa
First dating of a rock painting in Ẓufār (Sultanate of Oman)
We successfully measured four radiocarbon dates on two specimens of a black geometric rock painting with a fragment in jeopardy of naturally spalling off in the wall of a rock shelter in the Ẓufār region, in the south of the Sultanate of Oman. Extraction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) for radiocarbon dating of the binder in the black pigment of the rock painting specimen was conducted in the plasma oxidation laboratory at the Office of Archeological S…

Tracing the Holocene-rock art in the Libyan Sahara
These two volumes present the results of fieldwork conducted by Tertia Barnett from 2004-2009 in the Wādi al-Ajāl (Libya). The first volume provides a general synthesis in three sections: 1) presentation of Saharan rock art in general; history of discoveries and research; climate, environment and human activities in the Holocene Sahara; state of knowledge on the chronology. 2) Presentation of the method adopted for collecting data; results of the…
“Hunters” and “Herders” in the Central Sahara
With regard to the chronology of the rock art of the whole Saharan sub-continent, a very common opinion is that, starting from the VIIth millennium BP or even earlier, an older “Culture of the Hunters” had been replaced by groups of “Herders”, and that this change appeared in rock art as a modification of styles, techniques and, above all, of the set of themes associated with the imaginative world of these two populations. A series of recent publ…
The Rock Art of Sub-Saharan Africa
This chapter presents key dimensions of sub-Saharan African rock art (pictograms and petroglyphs). Particular attention is paid to recent approaches, the application of physico-chemical analyses, and stylistic determinations used to establish reliable chronologies. Stylistic approaches have been particularly influential in the interpretation of rock imagery, as has the identification of specific motifs (such as loincloths and aprons) that serve t…

Lovo, rock images, and mythology in the Land of the Kongo
In Kongo Central, rock art sites stretch from Kinshasa to the Atlantic coast and from northern Angola to southern Congo-Brazzaville. Preliminary research revealed one coherent entity situated north of the Kongo kingdom: the Lovo Massif, presently inhabited by the Ndibu, one of the Kongo subgroups. Comparison of the ethnological, historical, archaeological, and mythological points of view confirms that certain Kongo ritual and symbolic aspects are…

In the Gâret el-Hara rock-art site, the most oriental discovered in the Shâti area, were found 89 engravings only, — the earliest of them belonging to the local Hunters-Pastoralists, — but some of these representations are of great interest : bovid with a tether or with a circular horn-sign, man riding a bovid, Antelope probably caught in a trap, and several footprints of unidentified ruminants, which have homologues in various saharan sites, and…

The three functions in the Soddo area (Ethiopia) The still undated monoliths of this area show a tripartite organization of their decorative engravings (downwards : swords, stylized plant, subterranean perforation related to the dead's skull) which may square with the conceptions of the indo-european peoples of the Mediterranean (unitary heaven, surface of the earth, subterranean world

TiivistelmäLänsimaisia historian tutkijoita syytetään usein siitä, että he ylläpitävät vääristynyttä ‘eurosentristä’ maailmankuvaa. On totta, että modernin historiantutkimuksen menetelmät kehittyivät juuri Länsi-Euroopassa.

Jean Leclant
Jean Leclant’s interest for the Saharan rock pictures led him to perform, together with General Huard, a comprehensive survey of the entire area and to postulate the existence of a “Hunters culture” whose engraved “signs” would be found from the Nile to the Atlantic. Since this work, abundant new discoveries have multiplied in the Libyan desert, hence renewing this pioneering approach and changing our views on these issues

Prehistory in North Africa after the Middle Palaeolithic
Since the first important review by G. Camps (Camps, Delibrias & Thommeret 1968) and even the most recent one by R. Vernet (2004), both concluding that more research is urgently needed, several interdisciplinary programmes of survey and excavation have taken place in the Sahara, but their number is still too low. As a result, it is almost impossible to have a good overview of a zone covering 9 million square kilometres, all the more so as several…
