Better than chance? Descriptive and simulation-based modelling of ceramic group distributions in small samples
Czermno / Cherven’
The article discusses the results of the latest interdisciplinary studies on Site 2, ‘Zameczek’, a stronghold complex in Czermno (historical Cherven’). The fieldwork completed in 2022-2023 focused on Site 2 and included noninvasive investigations (GPR and LiDAR prospection), sondage excavation, laboratory analysis and conservation of archaeological finds, absolute dating, and desktop studies. The research objectives and questions formulated when …
The first results of archaeometric characterization and provenance studies of Byzantine amphorae from Poland
This paper reports on the results of the archaeometric characterization and provenance study of 27 fragments of medieval amphorae dating to the 11 th – 13 th century, recovered from the Czermno hillfort (chronicle name: Cherven’ ) – one of the most important sites in the early medieval Polish-Rus’ border zone. Two main groups of amphorae were identified through petrographic and elemental analysis. Comparison of WD-XRF results with the database of…

An report on this year's "Europa Postmediaevalis 2024: Patterns & Inspirations" conference on post-medieval and modern ceramics, held in Warsaw in April 2024. The conference was the fourth in a series of meetings organised in various European countries in the last six years under the common title Europa Postmediaevalis (2018 in Prague, 2020 – cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 in Coimbra), on the initiative of the international associat…
Na wschodzie bez zmian? W sprawie chronologii absolutnej ceramiki z obszaru pogranicza polsko-ruskiego.
Down by the river to the middle of nowhere? Avar-period metal artifacts discovered in Janowiec, site 3, Puławy district
The text discusses the results of typological and metallographic analyses of metal objects dated to the 7th-8th centuries from Janowiec on the Vistula River, including five bronze strap fittings, two silver bracelets with trumpet-like endings, two bronze bars, and lumps of melted metal. The analyses of the fittings indicate their direct associations with the Avar Kaganate. Currently, the fittings from Janowiec comprise the most numerous assemblag…
Post-medieval Pottery in Mazovia and Podlachia (16th–18th Century) – a Preliminary Report
The text is dedicated to the question of traditions and innovations in post-medieval pottery manufactured and used in the territory of today’s Mazovia and Podlachia in Poland. It focuses on the distribution of waregroups in the assemblages from selected sites dated to the mid-16th – late 18th centuries. The list includes both capital cities in the province (Warsaw, Płock) and local towns (Ciechanów, Płońsk, Przasnysz), as well as royal and aristo…
Dental caries and breastfeeding in early childhood in the late Medieval and Modern populations from Radom, Poland
Studies of dental caries on the deciduous dentition can be a source of information about changes in diet, which can be correlated with the time of eruption of the deciduous and permanent teeth. In this respect, the moment of transition from the maternal diet (mother's milk) to solid food is particularly interesting. The aim of this study was to assess changes in the diet of children who inhabited Radom, Poland, in the late Medieval/early Modern (…
Dental caries and isotope studies in the population of Radom (Poland) between the 11th and 19th centuries
This study aims to assess changes in the diet of individuals from Radom (Poland) by applying odontological and physicochemical methods. We evaluated the intensity of dental caries and quality of diet through isotope analyses (δ13C and δ15N). Three consecutive time periods were selected: the early Medieval (EMP, 11th to 12th c.), late Medieval/early Modern (LMP, 14th to 17th c.) and Modern (MP, 18th to19th c.) periods. The dental remains of 247 ad…
