First dating of a rock painting in Ẓufār (Sultanate of Oman)
We successfully measured four radiocarbon dates on two specimens of a black geometric rock painting with a fragment in jeopardy of naturally spalling off in the wall of a rock shelter in the Ẓufār region, in the south of the Sultanate of Oman. Premature Oxidation During Argon Plasma Cleaning of Water-Rich Radiocarbon Samples
Plasma oxidation for 14 C sampling utilizes low-pressure (133 Pa), low-energy ( 2 -plasmas generating CO 2 for AMS dating. O 2 -plasmas on empty chambers remove organic contamination. When clean, a new specimen is inserted and Ar-plasmas dislodge adsorbed atmospheric CO 2 from surfaces. Finally, O 2 -plasmas oxidize organic materials to CO 2 for AMS analysis. By the very early C.E. in the U.S. Upland Southwest, blankets or robes relying on turkey feathers as the insulating medium began to replace those made with strips of rabbit fur. Feather blankets would have been important possessions of most members of Ancestral Pueblo communities. Analysis of a 99 X 108 cm feather blanket dating approximately to the 1200s C.E. indicates it required over 180 m of yucca fiber cordage and an estimated 11,550 body fe…
Temporal Variation in Obsidian Procurement in the Northern Rio Grande and Its Implications for Obsidian Movement into the San Juan Area
Arakawa and colleagues (2011) use temporal changes in obsidian source patterns to link the late thirteenth-century abandonment of the Mesa Verde region to Ortman's (2010, 2012) model of Tewa migration to the northern Rio Grande. They employ Anthony's (1990) concept of reverse migration, inferring that an increase in Mesa Verde–region obsidian from a specific Jemez Mountain source reflects the scouting of an eventual migration path. Results of a surface survey of Morris Sites 9. 13, 15, 27, and 33 are presented. Based on mapped surface evidence it appears that Sites 13 (5MT2830) and 33 (5MT2831) together represent a single, nearly continuous line of Pueblo I roomblocks that stretches for over 600 m. Analysis of ceramics from the middens of these sites and other sites 700 m (5MT2829) and 1500 m (5MT2826) to the east demonstrates a primary occupation between A.D. 830–850. Room…
