Contextualism as an Important Facet of Individualism-Collectivism
Beliefs about personhood are understood to be a defining feature of individualism-collectivism (I-C), but they have been insufficiently explored, given the emphasis of research on values and self-construals. We propose the construct of contextualism, referring to beliefs about the importance of context in understanding people, as a facet of cultural collectivism. A brief measure was developed and refined across 19 nations (Study 1: N = 5,241), sh…
Individualism–collectivism and business context as predictors of behaviors in cross-national work settings
Temperament Styles of Nigerian and U.S. Children
Temperament styles of 400 Nigerian children are described in reference to possible gender and age differences and compared with those of 3200 U.S. children in light of Jung's theory of temperament as modified by Myers and Briggs, one that highlights four bipolar qualities: extroversion-introversion, practical-imaginative, thinking-feeling, and organized-flexible styles. Nigerian children generally prefer introverted to extroverted styles, practic…
Community Psychology in Africa
This article presents the findings of a descriptive survey conducted for the purposes of exploring whether and how community psychology has developed in the African region. In particular, the focus was on identifying whether and how community psychology has developed in the country concerned; what the key characteristics of this approach in that context are; what meta-theoretical frameworks and theoretical approaches are adopted to inform the pra…
Reliability analysis of Litwin and Stringer's Organizational Climate Questionnaire in a Nigerian sample
The results of a reliability analysis of the Organizational Climate Questionnaire (OCQ) developed by Litwin and Stringer (1968) in a Nigerian sample are presented. Data were collected from 600 employees of shoe, textile and food manufacturing industries in Lagos, Nigeria. An alpha co-efficient of .70 was observed for the OCQ. Test-retest reliability was ranged from .85 to .99 across the nine subscales. The inter-correlation of all subscales was l…
Demographic Effects on the Use of Vertical Sources of Guidance by Managers in Widely Differing Cultural Contexts
Data provided by 7380 middle managers from 60 nations are used to determine whether demographic variables are correlated with managers’ reliance on vertical sources of guidance in different nations and whether these correlations differ depending on national culture characteristics. Significant effects of Hofstede’s national culture scores, age, gender, organization ownership and department function are found. After these main effects have been di…
Culture-Level Dimensions of Social Axioms and Their Correlates across 41 Cultures
Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and cons…
