A critical analysis of India and Pakistan’s terrorism discourse in the context of geopolitics and imperialism
Why do India and Pakistan always quarrel over terrorism? The prevailing arguments more often implicate intriguing South Asian geopolitics surrounding the unresolved Kashmir dispute or pathological partition of British India in 1947 to explain this puzzle. Surprisingly, why and how the two countries verbalise terrorism has hardly been investigated in a comparative framework as a potential underpinning of this historical syndrome. This void has dep…
How do Militant Organizations Respond to Counterterrorism? Introducing the Live Typology, with Examples from Proscription in Pakistan
How do militant organizations respond to counterterrorism? A vast literature seeks to understand the effects of counterterrorism, examining outcomes such as levels of violence. However, violence is only one way that militant groups can respond to pressure. We focus on terrorist designation or proscription, the sanctions many states and international organizations impose on militants as an attempt to weaken them. We introduce a new typology of arm…
Geopolitics, statehood, violence and space compression in Gilgit-Baltistan
Existent literature about Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has made remarkable contributions in furthering the understanding about this region which is unique for its ambiguous constitutional status and multicultural society. This article aims to complement the existing works specifically in the theoretical domain of statehood and governance. It argues that the single most important factor, which crucially accounts for the prevailing woes of GB and its inha…
Communication (un)savviness and the failure of terrorism
The central hypothesis of this article is that there are a large number of terrorist groups which prolifically employ strategic communication (stratcom), while paradoxically, there are others who markedly underutilize it, and therefore, fail to mobilize support for the professed cause. The decisive determinant for either of the two ends, it is argued, obtains in the intellectual endowment or its banality among the conspiratorial groupings. A case…
The discourse and study of terrorism in decolonised states
The existing literature in the terrorism field does not address the absence of terrorism scholarship in developing countries. This article focuses on this intellectual gap using the case of Pakistan. It argues that most decolonised states, including Pakistan, are yet to grasp the complexities of traditional approaches to the study of terrorism, let alone its critical dimensions. The article explores some of the prevailing conditions in developing…
Why Pakistan Does Not Have a Counterterrorism Narrative
This article argues that not only has the counterterrorism (CT) commitment in Pakistan been ad hoc in recent years, but that the country's articulation of a softer type of CT response has been rhetorical at best. The research further highlights that Pakistan’s attempts to craft a scientifically structured counter narrative are neither traditional nor within the country’s current CT capability. The article’s arguments are analyzed through a guidin…
Religion, ethnicity, social organizations and terrorists’ behavior – a case of Taliban movement in Pakistan
Religion and ethnicity is widely associated with the unrelenting Taliban-led violence in Pakistan. Their shari'a rhetoric coupled with a sympathetic politico-religious constituency compounds the terrorism landscape for the general audience. Besides, less academic treatment of the phenomenon entailing analysis of its wholesome dimensions further constrains its understanding. Conceding the fact that religion pervades all aspects of contemporary con…
Faith, Reason and Statecraft in Contemporary Islam
Role of reason in faith and statecraft in Islam is the central feature that this article attempts to investigate. The underlying argument that constitutes the premise of the paper is the suggestion that faith and reason are mutually amenable, and their sustained bondage is essential for forward movement of the state, its citizenry and the statecraft.A key question being looked at is whether or not intellectual movement in Islam is experiencing sta…
