The Association Between Maternal Adiposity and Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration
In this study maternal adiposity had little impact on breastfeeding initiation but higher maternal adiposity was associated with shorter breastfeeding duration. This study suggests that more support should be given to mothers with overweight and obesity to promote longer duration of breastfeeding
Mapping how responsibility for poor diets is framed in the United Kingdom
Objective: To identify and present (i) how responsibility for poor diets in the UK is framed across the public, mass media and the government and (ii) how groups experiencing socio-economic disadvantage are presented within this framing. Design: A scoping review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using six databases. A systematic narrative synthesis guided by qualitative content analysis was applied to summarise the findings. Results: Thir…

How do we engage people in testing for Covid-19? A rapid qualitative evaluation of a testing programme in schools, GP surgeries and a university
Participants' and stakeholders' motivations, challenges and concerns need to be understood and these insights used to modify the programme in a continuous, real-time process to ensure and sustain engagement with testing over the extended period necessary. Community leaders and stakeholder organisations should be involved throughout programme development and implementation to optimise engagement
A new framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions
The UK Medical Research Council’s widely used guidance for developing and evaluating complex interventions has been replaced by a new framework, commissioned jointly by the Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research, which takes account of recent developments in theory and methods and the need to maximise the efficiency, use, and impact of research.
Women’s perceptions of factors influencing their food shopping choices and how supermarkets can support them to make healthier choices
This study highlighted that in-store environments can undermine intentions to purchase and consume healthy foods. Creating healthier supermarket environments could reduce the burden of personal responsibility for healthy eating, by making healthier choices easier. Future research could explore the interplay of personal, societal and commercial responsibility for food choices and health status

The Effects of Different Smoking Patterns in Pregnancy on Perinatal Outcomes in the Southampton Women’s Survey
Maternal smoking during pregnancy has established associations with poor perinatal outcomes. Among continuing pregnant smokers, harm-reduction strategies have been suggested, including temporary cessation of smoking during pregnancy, also known as partial quitting. Support for this strategy, however, remains limited. Six hundred and ninety-seven women in the Southampton Women's Survey who smoked at their last menstrual period were categorised int…
How can we best use opportunities provided by routine maternity care to engage women in improving their diets and health
Pregnancy provides motivation for women to improve their diets and increase their physical activity. Opportunistic brief interventions delivered as part of routine primary care have produced improvements in patients' health behaviour. Consequently, there have been calls for midwives to use contacts during pregnancy in this way. This study explored the experiences of pregnant women and research midwives/nurses of a brief intervention called Health…
