Staying active, staying sharp
There is clear evidence that performing physical activity is positively associated with improved HRQoL in people with cognitive impairment. Our findings underscore the critical role of public health initiatives, such as health education and community-based programs, in promoting physical activity to enhance the HRQoL of older Australians living with cognitive impairment
Cognitive impairment and self-reported health outcomes among older adults
This study found evidence that cognitive impairment is associated with poor health outcomes. To enhance the physical and mental health and well-being of older adults, the community, government and non-government organizations, and other stakeholders should prioritize routine healthcare prevention, targeted interventions, and treatment practices, particularly for individuals with or at risk of cognitive impairment
Socio-economic inequalities in health-related quality of life and the contribution of cognitive impairment in Australia
People from lower socioeconomic status (SES) groups tend to have lower HRQoL compared to those from higher SES. This leads to a greater disparity in HRQoL based on SES. Cognitive impairment positively contributed to this inequality in HRQoL. Therefore, it is critical to incorporate cognitive impairment into the design of interventions to reduce socioeconomic inequality in HRQoL
Self-reported disability and its association with obesity and physical activity in Australian adults
Obesity imposes a significant toll on adult Australians' health. This risk factor of disability can be reduced through public health interventions
Age and gender differences in the relationship between obesity and disability with self-perceived employment discrimination
The results provide evidence that obesity and disability contribute to employment discrimination in Australia. The findings can assist government and related agencies to consider the adequacy of existing discrimination legislation and help organisations to develop appropriate policies to address discrimination against obese and disabled people in their workplaces
Do gender-diverse boards over-invest in corporate social responsibility (CSR)
This study investigates the influence of “board gender diversity” on corporate social responsibility (CSR) over-investment and the extent of CSR reporting. The data are collected from listed companies in Mauritius for the period of 2007–2016. Content analysis is used to quantify CSR reporting in annual reports. The main finding of this study is that gender-diverse boards are associated with higher levels of CSR reporting and also with companies s…
Socioeconomic inequalities in mental health in Australia
Wealth-related inequalities of women’s knowledge of cervical cancer screening and service utilisation in 18 resource-constrained countries
Women's knowledge and utilisation of CCS services in RCCs are unequally distributed. Significant inequalities were identified among socioeconomically deprived women in the majority of countries. There is an urgent need for culturally appropriate community-based awareness and access programs to improve the uptake of CCS services in RCCs
The changing relationship between health burden and work disability of Australian cancer survivors, 2003–2017
A substantial proportion of cancer survivors experienced work disability which was more pronounced with the magnitude of the cancer health burden. The different dimensions of disability might be prevented by introducing cancer survivor-specific evidence-based interventions, and incorporating comprehensive social support. Recommendations to improve public health policy aimed at reducing population-level unhealthy lifestyle behaviours include: usin…
Distribution and predictors associated with the use of breast cancer screening services among women in 14 low-resource countries
The utilisation of BCS services is low in many LRCs. The findings of this study will assist policymakers in identifying the factors that influence the use of BCS services. To increase the national BCS rate, more attention should be essential to under-represented clusters; in particular women who have a poor socioeconomic clusters, live in a rural community, have limited access to mass media communication, and are have a low level educational back…

Development of a richer measure of health outcomes incorporating the impacts of income inequality, ethnic diversity, and ICT development on health
BACKGROUND: In the literature, measuring health outcomes usually entails examining one dependent variable using cross-sectional data. Using a combination of mortality and morbidity variables, this study developed a new, richer measure of health outcome. Using the health outcome index, this study investigated the impacts of income inequality, levels of ethnic diversity and information and communication technology (ICT) development on health using …
Health expenditure, child and maternal mortality nexus
BACKGROUND: This paper provides empirical evidence on how the relationship between health expenditure and health outcomes varies across countries at different income levels. METHOD: Heterogeneity and cross-section dependence were controlled for in the panel data which consist of 161 countries over the period 1995-2014. Infant, under-five and maternal mortality along with life expectancy at birth were selected as health outcome measures. Cross-sec…

Cost of illness for outpatients attending public and private hospitals in Bangladesh
Overall, public hospital patients, who tend to be the poorest, bear a larger economic burden of illness and treatment than relatively wealthier private hospital patients. The large economic impacts of illness need a public policy response which at a minimum should include a national health insurance scheme as a matter of urgency

This study explored the biological influences on students’ sexual taking behaviour at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A qualitative approach was used, comprising a total of 80 in-depth interviews and 4 focus group discussions. These were conducted between late 2008 and early 20…
They protect us, but are they using protection? The potential impact of HIV on the South African Police Service
The drivers of HIV/AIDS in the South African Police Service (SAPS) and impact of the disease on this workforce are neglected areas of research. Existing evidence suggests that while the occupational risk for contracting HIV is low, there are factors associated with the profession that, if left unmanaged, place police officers at risk of contracting HIV. This study's two aims are to identify the potential pathways of HIV infection within policing …

Local Democracy and Local Government Efficiency
In the international context it has been argued that institutional reform to leadership in local government can improve the sector in terms of both its democratic legitimacy and its operational efficiency. In Australia, despite two decades of far-reaching reform processes across state government jurisdictions, focused heavily on structural change, local government still faces daunting problems, yet the potential of reform to political leadership …

Commonwealth Drought Policy
Drought is a natural phenomenon that has particular implications for a primary industry, namely farmers. This paper examines the policy responses of the early 1990s. It is argued that these were driven more by political expedience than careful planning. In conclusion, it is suggested that drought policy shows one issue on which it was necessary to reverse, if only partially, the ‘economic rationalism’ that had dominated thinking in the 1980s

Confronting HIV/Aids in South African prisons
Within the South African prison system there are major problems like overcrowding and violence. A major problem which has received little attention is HIV/AIDS. The characteristics of the prison population makes them more highly susceptible to HIV infection than other people in South Africa. This in a society with already record-high levels of HIV infection. Government policies toward, and practices within, prisons basically ignore the HIV proble…

HIV/Aids policies, practices and conditions in South African prisons
The level of HIV infection in South African prisoners is unknown. However, given that 4.2 million citizens or 20% of the adult population are infected by HIV then the problem of infection within the prison system would seem to be a large and a significant management issue. Policies to treat HIV+ prisoners and prevent HIV transmission have been developed. However, the efficacy of those programmes implemented to prevent HIV transmission is question…
