Associations of Germline Genetic Variants With Depression and Fatigue Among Hematologic Cancer Patients Treated With Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
OBJECTIVE: Depression and fatigue are common among cancer patients and are associated with germline genetic variation. The goal of this pilot study was to examine genetic associations with depression and fatigue in the year after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). METHODS: Blood was collected from patients and their donors before HCT. Patients completed self-report measures of depression and fatigue before HCT (T1), 90 days post-HCT …
How a Priority of Community Outreach and Engagement Is Changing Health Equity at Cancer Centers
Addressing Rural Geographic Disparities Through Health IT
BACKGROUND: Rural communities experience disparate rates of chronic diseases and face distinct challenges in gaining access to health care. Increasing the reach of the US health information and communication technology infrastructure can support rural health by overcoming geographic and temporal health care barriers. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the study is to establish statistically valid point estimates for the use of health information technology …
Coping strategies modify risk of depression associated with hematopoietic cell transplant symptomatology
To determine whether coping strategies modify the risk of depression among allogeneic recipients experiencing post-transplant-related symptomatology, 105 participants (mean age = 52 years, 42% female) completed questionnaires 90 days post-transplant. A total of 28 percent reported depressive symptoms. Univariate correlations indicated that depression was associated with greater transplant-related symptomatology and avoidance, acceptance/resignati…
Development and validation of the biobanking attitudes and knowledge survey-Spanish (BANKS-SP)
Development and Validation of the Biomedical Research Trust Scale (BRTS) in English and Spanish
This study developed and validated the Biomedical Research Trust Scale (BRTS), a 10-item measure of global trust in biomedical research, in English and Spanish (BRTS-SP). In total, 85 English- and 85 Spanish-speaking participants completed the BRTS or BRTS-SP, as well as measures of biobanking attitudes, self-efficacy, receptivity, and intentions to donate blood or urine. Results indicated the BRTS and BRTS-SP showed adequate internal consistency…
Psycho-Oncology
Originally published by Oxford in 1998, Psycho-Oncology was the first comprehensive text in the field and remains the gold standard today. Edited by a team of leading experts in psycho-oncology, spearheaded by Dr. Jimmie C. Holland, the founder of the field, the text reflects the interdisciplinary nature and global reach of this growing field. Thoroughly updated and developed in collaboration with the American Psychosocial Society and the Interna…
Validity of the multidimensional fatigue symptom inventory-short form in an African-American community-based sample
Future research should further examine whether modifications to the MFSI-SF would, as the findings suggest, improve its validity as a measure of multidimensional fatigue in African-Americans
Skin surveillance intentions among family members of patients with melanoma
Interventions to promote skin surveillance behaviors among first-degree relatives of melanoma patients should highlight the benefits of early detection of melanoma, address barriers to receipt of total cutaneous examination and engagement in skin self-examination, and promote support from physicians and family members
Sun protection and sunbathing practices among at-risk family members of patients with melanoma
Interventions for family members at risk for melanoma might benefit from improving sun protection self-efficacy, reducing perceived sunbathing benefits, and targeting normative influences to sunbathe
Relation of Psychological Vulnerability Factors to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology in Bone Marrow Transplant Recipients
OBJECTIVE: Prior research suggests that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer can result in the development of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Based on Lazarus and Folkman's model of stress, the current study examined whether trauma appraisals, coping, social support, and social constraint were associated with the severity of PTSD symptoms in cancer patients who had undergone bone marrow transplantation (BMT). METHODS: Participa…
Measurement of depressive symptoms in cancer patients
The Caregiver Quality of Life Index–Cancer (CQOLC) scale
Prevalance, Predictors, and Course of Fatigue During Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer
Quality of Life Following Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer
Expectancies, Perceived Control, and Severity of Physical Side Effects of Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms After Bone Marrow Transplantation for Breast Cancer
OBJECTIVE: On the basis of revisions of DSM criteria, questions have been raised concerning the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among adults who have been diagnosed and treated for life-threatening illnesses. The present study examined the prevalence and correlates of PTSD symptoms among women who had undergone autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) for breast cancer. METHODS: Participants were 43 women who had …
Decision-Making About Genetic Testing Among Women at Familial Risk for Breast Cancer
OBJECTIVE: Recent identification of the breast-ovarian cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 and the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA2 have raised the possibility of clinical genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility. This study examined decision-making about future susceptibility testing among women at familial risk for breast cancer. Based on the transtheoretical model, it was hypothesized that readiness to undergo testing would be rela…
An experimental analysis of classically conditioned nausea during cancer chemotherapy
This study investigated classical conditioning in women undergoing outpatient adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. Breast cancer chemotherapy outpatients were randomly assigned either to an Experimental Group (exposed to a distinctive stimulus before each infusion of chemotherapy) or to a Control Group. After repeated infusions of chemotherapy, patients' responses to the experimental stimulus were assessed in a location not associated with ch…
