The University of Massachusetts' Later Stone Age/Pastoral ‘Neolithic’ Comparative Study in Central Kenya
The preliminary results of an intensive thirteen-month field programme are reported. Notes on an Archaeological Reconnaissance of Mt. Elgon, Kenya
Seronera
Excavations at six localities at Seronera in the Serengeti National Park of northern Tanzania have revealed traces of prehistoric occupation from the “Middle Stone Age” to within the present millennium. A stratigraphical sequence of pottery styles was established; the earliest ware being of Gumban A type, here dated to around the first century B.C. Subsequent and perhaps partly contemporary with the Gumban A material is a previously unrecorded wa…
Early Pottery and Other Finds from Kisii District, Western Kenya
An archaeological reconnaissance of Kisii District revealed traces of lithic industries of “Late Stone Age” affinity, of rock engravings, and of two previously unrecorded pottery wares. Kisii Soft Ware is a crude ware with varied rim-forms and decoration. Button-Necked Pottery is less frequently encountered and is characterised by appliqué bosses in the concave necks of the vessels. BNP is incontrovertibly associated with iron-working technology:…
