    Open Access•J M Najman, Gail M Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2026

Excluding child abuse and neglect, children may experience violence in their day-to-day lives, but little is known about the frequency of such experiences or the characteristics of those who perpetrate this violence. Some characteristics of the environment in which the child is reared, e.g., family economic disadvantage, or of the perpetrator, e.g., mental illness, may contribute to the level of violence children may routinely experience. This st…

Gabriele Fischer, Jane A Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2015

Cannabis is generally used to enhance mood (quality of life), but it is not known whether it has this effect in the medium to longer term. Data are taken from a prospective longitudinal study of pregnant women recruited at their first antenatal visit in Brisbane, Australia. Offspring data from the follow-ups with 14-year-olds and 21-year-olds…

Alexandra M Clavarino, Alexandra Clavarino et al.•ARTICLE•Mortality•2003

For patients with metastatic, incurable cancer the prognosis itself and its acceptance may influence their subjective well-being. This paper addresses the issue of what patients with incurable cancer should be told about their disease. It considers whether the patients' will to live and perceptions of the information their doctor provides may have consequences for well-being. The analysis is of a subset of data from a study of patients diagnosed …

  • Using quality of life endpoints in palliative care

    Alexandra M Clavarino, Alexandra Clavarino•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•1999•Citada por: 2•Referências: 51

Palliative care lends itself to concerns with the ‘quality’ rather than the ‘quantity’ of life. Increasingly, quality of life endpoints are being used as indicators of the effectiveness of palliative care in industrialised countries. These same measures, which have been developed in Western countries, are now being used in other cultural settings. This has occurred despite debate as to whether quality of life, and the domains used to measure it, …

  • The Quality of Qualitative Data

    Open Access•Alexandra M Clavarino, Alexandra Clavarino et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•1995•Citada por: 8•Referências: 20

Researchers are familiar with claims that, for various reasons, many conceptions of reliability and validity are inappropriate to the analysis of qualitative data. Using transcripts drawn from doctor-patient consultations, the authors examine two methods of assessing the reliability of data and the validity of their interpretations. First, the method of intercoder agreement is used and assessed. Second, the methods of conversation analysis are ap…
