Water and landscape management for 3,000 years in a mid-mountain area

Holocene paleoecological changes and agro-pastoral impact on the La Narce du Béage mire (Massif Central, France)
A paleoecological study (macrofossils, pollen, cryptogam spores, non-pollen palynomorphs) was performed to investigate environmental changes recorded on the peat deposits of the La Narce du Béage mire (Massif Central, France). We reconstructed the development of a limnogenous mire ecosystem during the Holocene, consequently to the infilling of a small Late Glacial lake. Successions from aquatic flora ( Isoëtes, Nitella opaca/ syncarpa, Botryococc…

The NeoArabia project tries to understand how environmental, social, economic and technological factors work in concert to influence settlement and abandonment along a latitudinal transect of 1200 km from UAE to southern Oman. This region was affected by wide north–south variations in the Indo‐Arabian monsoon, marine upwelling activity and eustatic variations in the Mid‐Holocene. On the local settlement scale, this transect is based on fine strat…
First Obsidian in the Northern French Alps during the Early Neolithic
An exceptional discovery was made in 2013 in the northern French Alps, at the Grande Rivoire site in Sassenage (Isre department): an obsidian bladelet from Sardinia was found in a cultural horizon dated to about 5360-5210 CAL B.C. The abundant arrowheads found with it are characteristic of the Early Neolithic in the South of France (Cardial/Epicardial). Yet there was no pottery or domestic fauna, and only discrete markers of farming. The typologi…
Use of the Radiocarbon Activity Deficit in Vegetation as a Sensor of CO 2 Soil Degassing
Soil CO 2 flux measurement is a key method that can be used to monitor the hazards in an active volcanic area. In order to determine accurately the variations of the CO 2 soil emission we propose an approach based on the radiocarbon ( 14 C) deficiency recorded in the plants grown in and around the Solfatara (Naples, Italy). We twice sampled selected poaceae plants in 17 defined sites around the Solfatara volcano. 14 C measurements by liquid scint…
The Cave of Pan, Marathon, Greece—AMS Dating of the Neolithic Phase and Calculation of the Regional Marine Reservoir Effect
The Cave of Pan is located on the N/NE slope of the hill of Oinoe (38°09′31.60′′N, 23°55′48.60′′E), west of modern Marathon. In rescue excavation campaigns during the last three years, among other finds, charcoal and seashell samples were also collected. The purpose of this study is the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating of the cave’s anthropogenic deposits and the calculation of the regional marine reservoir effect during the Neolithic p…
Chapter 2. “Balkans 4000”
In the previous chapter we exposed the general framework in which the “Balkans 4000” project was conceived and the main criteria used for the choice of sites to be dated. Here we discuss the precise conditions under which the selection and processing of samples were conducted, and present the results in detail. Sampling strategy The first condition for a reliable radiocarbon date concerns the physical quality of the measured sample (its nature, m…
New dating of the "mask" of La Roche-Cotard (Langeais, Indre-et-Loire, France)
The « mask » of La Roche-Cotard was discovered in a layer containing a characteristic Middle Paleolithic lithic industry. After a first 14C result of 32 ka BP, two further 14C dates now assign the layer to more than 40 ka, but above all an OSL date obtained on quartz attributes to the layer containing the « mask » an age of 75.6 ± 5.8 ka. This new result confirms that 14C dates with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, obtained on bones of that layer a…

Until fairly recently, study of the Neolithic in Brittany was principally dedicated to the megalithic monuments due to the numerous sites there. Gradually, research was oriented towards settlement remains, notably through the development of rescue archaeology in the 1980s. This is particularly the case for the Early Neolithic and, for the first time in 1996, an important excavation was carried out on a house dated to the beginning of the fifth mi…

Second Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for the Chauvetpont d'Arc Cave, Ardèche, France
The Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave is one of the most important sites for the study of the earliest manifestations and development of prehistoric art at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. Different dating techniques have been performed thus far (AMS 14 C, U/Th TIMS, 36 Cl dating) to model the chronological framework of this decorated cave. The cave yielded several large charcoal fragments, which enabled the opportunity for obtaining multiple dates;…
The lowest levels at Dikili Tash, northern Greece
Tells famously capture the historical sequences of the earliest farmers—but digging them is not easy. With a depth of strata of 17m at Dikili Tash, the earliest occupation was out of reach of a trench. But our researchers got there by coring, extending the date of the first occupation back 1000 years, and deducing, from small samples, the changing environment and possible connections with Anatolia

Stratigraphy of late-Holocene deposits of the ancient harbour of Marseilles, southern France
The late-Holocene stratigraphy of Marseilles harbour is presented together with archaeological evidence and radiocarbon data. An anthropogenic oyster midden, dated between c. 4260 and 3400 14 C yr BP is followed by a period of siltation that ended the accretionary growth of an algal (marl) deposit. This event was caused by early human settlement. Subsequently the coastline was subject to progradation. It is argued here that the development of the…
