Adverbials in Extra-left position in spoken Danish
The article describes the distribution of fronted adverbial constituents in Danish in the Prefield and the Extra-left (‘left dislocation’) positions: i morgen skal vi i skole versus i morgen der skal vi i skole ‘tomorrow we go to school’. The data, 635 sentences with a fronted adverbial, are extracted from seven sociolinguistic interviews. The article shows that some types of adverbials are more liable to occur in the Extra-left position than oth…
Enhanced coarticulatory labialization of /t s / in Argentine Danish
This paper presents an acoustic study of coarticulation of Argentine Danish /t s / using Centre of Gravity (CoG) as the acoustic measure. It shows that the articulation of /t s / is affected by the roundedness of the following vowel, and that this is more prevalent among speakers of Argentine Danish than among speakers of Modern Danish as spoken in Denmark. The analysis also shows that within Argentine Danish, the speakers of the isolated settlem…
Socioeconomic disparities in long Covid diagnosis among ethnic minorities in Denmark
These findings highlight the need to address ethnic disparities in long COVID, particularly among migrants with low income. Workplace interventions and policies targeting work-related vulnerabilities could help reduce the disproportionate burden of long COVID among migrant workers
The use of case forms in Modern Danish – an empirical study
This paper investigates the distribution of the nominative (nom) and the oblique (obl) form in personal pronouns in Modern Danish. As per a primary rule, pronoun NPs functioning as subjects are typically in the nom form, whilst the obl form is used in all other syntactic functions. Nonetheless, this rule is subject to certain exceptions in a number of constructions. In this paper, we present four studies concerning the distribution of nom and obl…
Argentine Danish Grammatical Gender
This paper investigates the expression of grammatical gender in Heritage Argentine Danish. We examine a subset of the Corpus of South American Danish of approximately 20,500 tokens of gender marking produced by 90 speakers. The results show that Argentine Danish gender marking in general complies with the Standard Denmark Danish rules. However, there is also systematic variation: While there is hardly any difference compared to Standard Denmark D…
Kalasha (Bumburet variety)
Kalasha (ISO 639-3: kls), also known as Kalashamon, is a Northwestern Indo-Aryan language spoken in Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkwa Province in northern Pakistan, primarily in the valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur, Urtsun, and Birir, as shown in Figure 1. The number of speakers is estimated between 3000 and 5000. The Ethnologue classifies the language status as ‘vigorous’ (Eberhard, Simons & Fennig 2019) but some researchers consider it ‘threaten…
Correlations between linguistic change and linguistic performance among heritage speakers of Danish in Argentina
The article addresses the issue of an assumed correlation between heritage language speakers’ linguistic system and their fluency. Previous research has shown that heritage language speakers who have grammatical patterns that are divergent from the language spoken in the homeland also have lexical retrieval problems and speak with a slower speech rate. We approach the issue by examining two linguistic features and 11 different fluency features (‘…
Diminishing social inequality between refugee children and their peers growing up in Denmark
Not being in employment, education or training (NEET) as a youth consistently predicts adverse educational, labour market and health outcomes. School-aged refugee children are known to be particularly vulnerable within each of these domains. Yet little is known about how these outcomes have evolved over time. This study explores trends in the risk of youth NEET status during the early twenties for refugees and their non-refugee peers in Denmark f…
Phonological Individuation in a Former Danish Settlement in South Dakota, USA
The article describes the manifestation and distribution of 15 phonological variables in a rural heritage language community in South Dakota, USA. I discuss to what extent dialect convergence has occurred in this former Danish settlement. The data sample encompasses speakers born in Northwest Jutland in Denmark, as well as speakers born in South Dakota to parents who emigrated from Northwest Jutland. The analysis shows that dialectal convergence …
Multimorbidity and mortality thereof, among non-western refugees and family reunification immigrants in Denmark – a register based cohort study
Refugees are an at-risk group for multimorbidity, however, mortality among those with multimorbidity is lower in all migrant groups compared to Danish-born

Health-seeking behaviour among newly arrived immigrants in Denmark ISRCTN24905314 , May 1, 2015 (Retrospectively registered)
Word Order in American Danish Declaratives with a Non-Subject Initial Constituent
The paper investigates the placement of subject and finite verb in topicalized, i.e. non-subject initial declarative main clauses in North American Danish. European Danish adheres to the V2-rule and thus requires inversion, while North American Danish allows for non-inversion, i.e. [ X ] SV word order. Based on a sample of approx. 1700 tokens of topicalized declarative clauses produced by 64 speakers, we observe a general stability of V2 in North…
Inequalities in mortality among refugees and immigrants compared to native Danes – a historical prospective cohort study
Mortality patterns were overall advantageous for refugees and immigrants compared with native Danes. Research should concentrate on disentangling the reasons behind migrants' health advantages, in order to enlighten future preventive public-health efforts, for the benefit of the entire population
Interpreting Parameters in the Logistic Regression Model with Random Effects
Logistic regression with random effects is used to study the relationship between explanatory variables and a binary outcome in cases with nonindependent outcomes. In this paper, we examine in detail the interpretation of both fixed effects and random effects parameters. As heterogeneity measures, the random effects parameters included in the model are not easily interpreted. We discuss different alternative measures of heterogeneity and suggest …
Effect of social class on tumour size at diagnosis and surgical treatment in Danish women with breast cancer
