Boudica, the Warrior Queen, as seen through DevianArt
The paper aims to investigate the image of the Warrior Queen Boudica (Boudicca, Boadicea) in contemporary pop culture through the lens of the website DeviantArt (®), providing valuable information about the countries and the gender of the creators, along with the possibility of studying the creative scene in real-time by artists who are most often not professionals but young creators and even more importantly, young female creators. From a genera…
Tracing metallurgical links and silver provenance in Balkan coinage (5th -1st centuries BCE)
Local types of coinage testify to the emerging use of silver in the Balkan interior, possibly related to abundant ore deposits in the region. Here, we present Pb isotope data for silver coins minted by local tribes and settlements (anepigraphic coins attributed to the Derrones/Laeaei, Damastion, Pelagia, Kings of Paeonia) between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. For comparison, we analysed coinage of the potential Greek emporia Dyrrhachium and Apol…

Pseudo-Civic not Civic
This paper considers all the monetary issues of large silver coins struck in the name of Greek cities between Lycia and Syria under Persian rule. It is argued that these apparently civic coinages were in fact pseudocivic, struck at a supra-civic level for the needs of the Persian army.
Origin and fate of the greatest accumulation of silver in ancient history
The capture of the Achaemenid treasuries in 331-330 BCE by Alexander the Great in Persepolis and Susa marked the demise of the 300-year-old Persian Empire and the advent of Hellenistic kingdoms. Alexander seized the equivalent of about 5000 tons of silver, which represented the accumulated tributes paid by subjugated people from the Aegean Sea to the Indus to their Achaemenid rulers. Die studies show that this gigantic amount of silver, the so-ca…
A Still Life Oil Painted by Hendrik Vander Borght in 1650 With Ancient Coins From Dacia
An oil painting by Hendrik Vander Borght and dated 1650 displays an assemblage of Roman vases (6 in clay and 2 in glass) and 11 ancient coins (3 Greek, 3 Roman Republican and 5 Roman Imperial), depicted with an astonishing accuracy, allowing a precise identification for most of them. From an archaeological point of view, such a grouping of coins can only come from ancient Dacia. It is argued here that the painting is organized in order to display…
Model for ancient Greek and Roman coinage production
Coinage production of ancient powers such as Athens and Rome is usually inferred from die statistics of monetary issues. The present work applies a Kaplan-Meier analysis of resistance to failure to 29 sets of well-documented monetary issues. The failure rate function assumes a U-shaped form known in reliability engineering literature as the ‘bathtub curve’. With the geometric distribution of die failure being demonstrably violated for a large fra…
From commodity to money
The reasons why the Western Mediterranean, especially Carthage and Rome, resisted monetization relative to the Eastern Mediterranean are still unclear. We address this question by combining lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) isotope abundances in silver coinage from the Aegean, Magna Graecia, Carthage and Roman Republic. The clear relationships observed between 109 Ag/ 107 Ag and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb reflect the mixing of silver ores or silver objects with Pb m…

A miner's perspective on Pb isotope provenances in the Western and Central Mediterranean
The conventional approach to ore provenance studies of ancient silver coins and artifacts has been to first analyze and then try to match them to published data about mining districts, a difficult task given our incomplete knowledge of these. While literary sources are useful to identify possible provenances, they potentially bias interpretations proper because of a variety of limitations of their time. Archeological evidence in the form of minin…

The Coinages of the Attalids and their Neighbours
This chapter is concerned with the quantification, through die-studies, of the coinages struck by the Attalids and their neighbours, both cities and kings. The global picture is one of small-scale monetary production by the Attalids before the introduction of the cistophoric coinage, approximately one fifth that of the Seleukids and one fifteenth that of the Ptolemies. The second-century cistophoroi were struck on a much more abundant yearly basi…

Coinage, Hellenistic
The Hellenistic period is characterized by a considerable extension of coinage in terms of areas, quantities, and use. The massive monetization of the Persian treasuries undertaken by Alexander the Great in order to pay his troops plays a key role in this phenomenon.
Royal Hellenistic Coinages
"A large gap exists in the literature of ancient numismatics between general works intended for collectors and highly specialized studies addressed to numismatists. Indeed, there is hardly anything produced by knowledgeable numismatists that is easily accessible to the academic community at large or the interested lay reader. The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage will fill this gap by providing a systematic overview of the major coinages…
