Pilot Testing an Ecotherapy Program for Adolescence
Children and young people's mental health and well-being has seen a dramatic decline. In the UK, this has been exacerbated by service retrenchment associated with austerity, with evidence of increasing health inequalities. Service innovation that is grounded in practice, has ongoing learning, and is co-designed with children and young people is required now. This can provide creative solutions within the local context and contribute to the fledgl…
Assessment of Student Problem-Solving on Ill-Defined Tasks
Investigations of formal problem-solving are conducted with the expectation that they will predict or at least help understand informal or everyday problem-solving. For instance, if a student scores well on a multiple-choice physics exam, the expectation is that the student will also do well on an everyday physics problem. Traditionally the evaluation of problem-solving skills in educational testing and cognitiw psychology has been dominated by f…

A Marker Method to Test a Phasing Hypothesis in Family Problem-Solving Interaction

Private Self-Consciousness as a Moderator Variable
Previous studies suggested that private self-consciousness may function as a moderator of the predictive validity of self-report measures of personality. This paper critically examined the construct validity of the Self-consciousness Scale used to measure private self-consciousness. The conceptual and methodological difficulties involved in measuring private self-consciousness are discussed with particular reference to the ubiquity of self-consci…
The Development and Validation of an Instrument to Assess Student Attitudes towards Work
A 75 item instrument was developed to assess Student Attitudes Towards Work. Fifteen scales were derived, each based on 5 items in a Likert format. Analysis of responses from 1035 students in the ninth and twelfth grades showed what were judged to be high reliabilities (ranging from .46 to .70). Group differences based on age, sex, previous work experiences, and vocational ambitions lent support to the validity of the scales
The Student's Perception of Ability Scale
The Student's Perception of Ability Scale (SPAS) was developed in response to a need for a reliable and valid instrument to measure subject-based academic self-concept in elementary school children. This scale was designed for use with children in grades three to six. Descriptive data on the SPAS were discussed in terms of their substantive, structural, and external validity. Normative data were also highlighted. The scale was found to have six m…
An Application Of Inferential Statistics To The Factorial Invariance Problem
Attention has been drawn to the lack of standards for evaluating the degree of goodness of fit of patterns resulting from a principal components analysis of two data sets. An empirical sampling distribution of the statistic average trace (E'E), as E is obtained in the orthogonal Procrustes problem for various orders of A matrices was developed through a Monte Carlo approach. A method is presented which can be used as a guideline in determining wh…
A Comparison Between the Structures of Divergent Production Abilities of Children at Two Levels of Intellectual Functioning
Twelve divergent production tests were administered to 46 adolescents whose average WISC full scale IQ was 69.5 and t o a similar group of 48 adolescents whose average WISC full scale IQ was 104.6. Six divergent production factors were extracted in each group and rotated t o a target derived from Guilford's Structure of Intellect Model. In general the subnormal group produced a better fit to the hypothesized structure than the normal group, altho…
Semantic Differential Methodology for the Structuring of Attitudes
The semantic differential technique can be used to structure attitude domains. In the present paper, the selection of scales and concepts and the format for administration are discussed in terms of an underyling linear model. Three methods of calculating correlations are evaluated with the method known as “stringing out” being preferred. Suggestions for factor analysis and factor matching are made. Some applications of the exploratory use of the …

The 1900 Revision of German Divorce Laws
In 1959, Wolf, Lüke, and Hax published Scheidung und Scheidungsrecht (Divorce and Divorce Law), dealing with the effects of revision of German divorce laws in 1900 on the rates of divorce and petition for divorce. This paper is a reanalysis of Wolf, Lüke, and Hax's data with newly developed inferential statistical models, and a reappraisal in light of appropriate statistical analyses of then-conclusions and those of Max Rheinstein (1960) in his r…

Abuses of Factor Scores
A variant of the method of principal components which is due to Hotelling (1933), is currently perhaps the most popular choice for analyzing a group of variables into factors. The practitioner often refers to components analysis as analysis with l's in the diagonal. Kaiser's suggestion (1960; 1964) to retain only the same number of factors as there are latent roots greater than one of the matrix, R, of intercorrelations among the variables has ga…
