Pascoe's book is about the discipline of Australian history, but there are several senses in which it is not an historical work. The history discipline provides the subject but not the method?which is more typi cally sociological. Thus it is perhaps appropriate that the reviewer is not an historian but a sociologist. Marital Status and Female Achievement in Australia
This paper examines the relationship of the marital status of Australian women to relative occupational success and to postsecondary education. As predicted, occupational success is associated with single status, but the relationship is not statistically significant. The relationship between education and single status, however, is significant. These results are similar to results obtained in U.S. studies. While acknowledging that marriage impede…
Wife Occupational Superiority and Marital Troubles
Socioeconomic Status, Gender Inequality and Women's Mental Health
Data from the Canberra Mental Health Survey are utilized to answer questions concerning the mental health status of women (especially married women). Using the Langner Scale as the main index it is shown that there is a complex relationship between the socio‐economic status of a married woman's occupation, and the status of her husband's job. It is also shown that there is an association between sex, marital status and mental health that runs in …
