System Dynamics Approaches and Collective Action for Community Health
System dynamics ( SD ) methods, from qualitative causal loop diagramming to quantitative simulation modeling, have the potential to be powerful tools for engaging community stakeholders interested in improving health. However, the extent to which SD drives collective action to improve community health is unclear. The objective of this review was to understand how often, why, and how SD has been used by cross‐sector community collectives. Of 409 i…
Spatial Analytics Based on Confidential Data for Strategic Planning in Urban Health Departments
Spatial data analytics can detect patterns of clustering of events in small geographies across an urban region. This study presents and demonstrates a robust research design to study the longitudinal stability of spatial clustering with small case numbers per census tract and assess the clustering changes over time across the urban environment to better inform public health policy making at the community level. We argue this analysis enables the …

Experiences of African American Parents Following Perinatal or Pediatric Death
A child's death is one of life's most difficult experiences. Little is known about the unique factors that influence the grief experience for bereaved African American parents. Through an integrative review of 10 publications, the authors describe the grief responses, outcomes, and implications for African American parents who experience the death of a child. Four themes emerged: (a) emotional response to loss; (b) factors that added to the burde…

An Innovative Method to Involve Community Health Workers as Partners in Evaluation Research
Objectives. We developed a process through which community outreach workers, whose role is not typically that of a trained researcher, could actively participate in collection of qualitative evaluation data. Methods. Outreach workers for a community-based intervention project received training in qualitative research methodology and certification in research ethics. They used a Voice over Internet Protocol phone-in system to provide narrative rep…
Stress and Coping in African American Women With Chronic Heart Disease
This article examines the role of stress in relation to heart disease self-care among African American women. Women described a unique stress-coping model: Stress was a cause and contributor to “bad heart” and associated with “not worrying.” Family history of heart disease was used as an experiential reference scale to evaluate the severity of women’s heart health. Stress attributions were associated with coping practices to manage the effect of …

A Conceptual Framework to Measure Performance of the Public Health System
Objectives. This article describes a unifying conceptual framework for the public health system as a way to facilitate the measurement of public health system performance. Methods. A conceptual framework for the public health system was developed on the basis of the work of Donabedian and a conceptual model previously developed by Bernard Turnock and Arden Handler. Results. The conceptual framework consists of 5 components that can be considered …
