Results of the study of Kup-Egyes prehistoric settlement
The prehistoric settlement Kup-Egyes is located near the city of Pápa, N-Central Transdanubia. It was located in 1974. Sándor Mithay, archaeologist, director of the Pápa Municipal Museum (later: Esterházy Károly Castle Museum) used to perform authenticating excavations on the site where he found settlement traces of the Linearbandkeramik and the Lengyel culture. The excavated material of multiple field seasons is published in details below. The p…
Preliminary investigations on the chipped stone industry of the Copper Age settlement of Malnaş Băi (Málnásfürdő)-Füvenyestető (Covasna County, Romania)
The chipped stone collection unearthed during the 2014-2016 archaeological excavations from the Copper Age settlement at Malnaş Băi was analysed from a multidisciplinary perspective. The aims were to differentiate between the processing technologies of the local rocks and of the long-distance raw materials and to assess the technological traditions that characterise their production. The elemental composition of a selected sample set of the artef…

A Cserhát-Cserhátalja-Gödöllői-dombság-Mátraalja vidékéről származó balták részletes vizsgálata roncsolásmentes (makroszkópos kőzettani megfigyelés, mágneses szuszceptibilitás mérés, PGAA, eredeti felszínen végzett SEM-EDS) és alárendelten roncsolásos (OM, SEMEDS) vizsgálatával meghatároztuk a…

A belső árok mindkét oldalán paliszádárkok mutatkoztak. A kapuk tájolása megfelel a dunántúli lengyeli körárkokra jellemző mintázatnak. A körárok belsejébe…

Contribution to the cognizance of raw materials and raw material regions of the Transcarpathian Palaeolithic
On the territory Transcarpathian Ukraine, about 100 Palaeolithic localities are known up to our days. Most of them are surface finds. In spite of the rich archaeological heritage, the elaboration of the material, especially its petroarchaeological evaluation supported by professional scientific analytical methods, is in the initial phase as yet. The aim of the present study is to supply information on the lithic raw materials of the Palaeolithic …
Lithic implements at Ariuşd (Erősd). A preliminary report
Ariuşd (Erősd) is the eponym site of the Copper Age Ariuşd group. The systematic investigation of the site has begun over a hundred years ago. Recent archaeological studies could clarify the layer sequence and the artefacts of the site, especially the pottery finds. Our current paper is aiming at presenting the chipped lithic industry, the largest of its kind within the Ariuşd group. Though this study is a work in progress with several open quest…

The Nyírlugos obsidian core depot find is one of the most important lithic assemblages in the collection of the Hungarian National Museum (HNM). The original set comprised 12 giant obsidian cores, of which 11 are currently on the permanent archaeological exhibition of the HNM. One of the cores is known to be inDebrecen. The first publication attributed the hoard, on the strength of giant (flint) blades known from the Early and Middle Copper Age T…
Előzetes jelentés a Nagytevel-Tevel-hegyi kovabánya ásatásának eredményeiről
Nagytevel határában, a Tevel-hegyen található Magyarország egyetlen, szoros értelemben véve tűzkőnek nevezhető kova nyersanyaga. A felső kréta korú mészkőben, amelyet a község határában egy modern kőbánya tár fel, gyakran 20–30 cm nagyságú tűzkő gumók figyelhetők meg. A környéken több alkalommal gyűjtöttek megmunkált kovaszilánkokat. A területen 2005 és 2008 között feltárásokat végeztünk a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum és a Veszprém Megyei Múzeumok Igazg…
Cold Neutron Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis—a Non‐destructive Method for Characterization of High Silica Content Chipped Stone Tools and Raw Materials
Recently, several archaeometrical projects have been started on the prehistoric collection of the Hungarian National Museum. Among the analytical methods applied, non‐destructive prompt gamma activation analysis has a special importance. We have also tested the potential of this method on chipped stone tools, with the aim of determining their exact provenance. On the basis of major and trace element components, characterizations of stone tools an…
Radiolarit minták vizsgálata ionnyaláb analitikai módszerekkel
A radiolarit mélytengeri (óceáni) kovakőzet. Nevét a Radioláriákról (sugárállatka) kapta. A radiolaritok különféle változatai fontos nyersanyagai voltak a Kárpát-medencében élt őskori embereknek. A legjobb minőségű, vonzó színű változatok, elsősorban a szentgáli radiolarit elterjedési területe összemérhető az őskor legjelentősebb távolsági nyersanyagainak (obszidián, északi tűzkövek) hasonló adataival. Cikkünkben a különböző, szabad szemmel elkül…
Szeletian felsitic porphyry
Szeletian felsitic porphyry is one of the most famous raw materials used in the Hungarian Palae olithic. 1 It was identified, under various names, by students of the Palaeolithic material of the Bükk region in the earliest petroarchaeological descriptions.Due to its high silica content and homogeneity it was erroneously identified as hornstone, 2 later as ash-grey chalcedony, 3 even in petrographical descriptions based on thin sections. 4 Interes…
