Where did the ore come from? Pb isotope provenance of a Pre-Columbian speiss/matte fragment from the Metallurgist’s Burial at Castillo de Huarmey (Peru)
More than a ware. Preliminary observations on the typological, mineralogical, and chemical diversity of cream wares from Jordan (mid-8th to 11th centuries)
Wide spectrum of cream wares from mid-8th to 11th centuries expands ’ware’ concept. • Cream wares exhibit regional diversity in terms of compositional characteristics. • Multiple workshops produced cream wares within a single ’signature style’. • Significant compositional and technological differences exist between main sub-categories of Islamic Cream Ware. The ceramic repertoire of Jordan, as well as that of the wider Bilad al-Sham, underwent si…
In‐depth study of a speiss/matte sample from Castillo de Huarmey, North Coast of Peru, and its implications for the pre‐Columbian production of arsenic bronze in the Central Andes
This study aims to characterize the phase composition and chemistry of the speiss/matte sample from the Metallurgist's Burial at Castillo de Huarmey and to use the information derived from these analyses to infer the temperatures, furnace conditions, and ores associated with the smelting processes, which created the speiss/matte sample. For this purpose, a number of geochemical analyses were performed on the spies/matte fragment: analysis of the …
Determination of the origin of lead objects from Risan and Riječani (Montenegro) based on lead isotope analysis
Periodization of piracy in the Persian Gulf Cultural World from the British colonial perspective, 1873–1949
So far, no in-depth analysis of piracy in the Persian Gulf Cultural World has been undertaken since 1820, when a treaty was signed between the British and local sheikhs. Therefore, this article aims to systematize the occurrence of piracy in this region in the years 1873–1949. Over 80 studies by British colonial institutions were used for the analysis, so the topic is presented in its entirety from the perspective of the Crown. First, time interv…
Deciphering the origin of small metal artefacts from Castillo de Huarmey (Peru) with Pb, Cu, and Ag isotopes
This paper presents Ag, Cu, and Pb isotopes for five silver and 10 copper artefacts found in the first intact pre‐Columbian tomb of the Wari culture female elite at Castillo de Huarmey, Peru. Ag and Cu isotope data indicate that the metals were extracted from primary, hypogene ore deposits. Most of the Pb isotope data for the Castillo de Huarmey artefacts correlate with the core Wari site of Conchopata, suggesting utilization of ores from similar…
Application of arsenic surveying for determining the position of former mining and metallurgical constructions
Soil geochemical prospecting is becoming an increasingly important part of archaeological research. Therefore, it is possible to determine the location of various archaeological facilities that no longer exist in the study region. In this study, a morphological analysis of the "Stara Góra" deposit in Radzimowice (Lower Silesia, Poland) was performed using LiDAR DTM (light detection and ranging digital terrain model) images and historical data tha…
Chemical composition of small fragments of metals from Castillo de Huarmey (Peru)
Small metal fragments were found in the tomb of the Wari culture elite (Castillo de Huarmey, Peru). These objects were subjected to chemical analysis using a scanning electron microscope with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and field emission (FE‐SEM‐EDS), an electron microprobe analyser with field emission (FE‐EMPA) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Chemical composition analysis showed that four different alloys were used to make copper…
A new guidebook analysis method for the study of tourist-historic cities
This paper proposes a new guidebook analysis method for the study of tourist–historic cities, which are well recognized in the Maghreb; hence, six cities from this region were selected for the research sample (Algiers and Constantine in Algeria, Marrakesh and Tangier in Morocco, and Sousse and Tunis in Tunisia). The main purpose of this research paper is to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of this original method

Application of electron microprobe analysis to identify the origin of ancient pottery production from the Castillo de Huarmey, Peru
A vast amount of ceramics (among other grave goods) were recovered from Castillo de Huarmey, a Wari culture (650–1050 ce ) archaeological site on the north coast of Peru. In order to assess ceramic production area(s) and possible trade, political or cultural interactions with other regions, and to complement earlier petrographic analysis, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) was conducted following a rarely used methodology in archaeology. The che…
Functional and spatial changes of souks in Morocco’s imperial cities in the context of tourism development
Souks have undergone functional and spatial changes in the Moroccan medinas since colonial times due to the tourist activities. The rate of the changes increased at the end of the 20th century because of the expansion of tourism projects. However, there are no publications on the evolution of Moroccan souks in the context of tourism development. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to determine the types of transformations the souks underwen…
The possibilities of using the guidebook analysis method in research on the evolution of urban tourism space in Maghreb countries
Research on the evolution of tourism space in Maghreb cities is hindered due to the limited availability and questionable credibility of the data. The guidebook analysis method was developed by S. Liszewski (1999) and it offers a way of analysing tourism space. The main objective of this research paper is to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of using this method to analyse changes in the urban tourism space of the Maghreb. This paper pres…
Możliwości wykorzystania metody przewodnikowej w badaniach nad ewolucją miejskiej przestrzeni turystycznej w krajach Maghrebu
Perception of the relations between former colonial powers and developing countries
People register and process stimuli every day, creating an image of space–time reality involving multifaceted relations between various states. The authors have created a database consisting of articles from the periodical Le Monde diplomatique from 1954 to 2009. This paper focuses on investigating how strong relations are between former colonial powers and developing countries. The authors present an index showing the frequency of coincidence of…
