Broadening Well-being Indicators for Developed Countries
The aim of this paper is to propose a set of dimensions and indicators to measure the incidence and trends of unmet social needs related to well-being and aggregate them into a composite index (USNI). We contribute to the current literature on the measurement of social needs through broader and more systematic indicators based on the principles of access, quality, and equity. Using different microdata sources, we take a selected sample of Europea…
What contributes to rising inequality in large cities
This paper aims to analyze the trends in income inequality in large cities within a selected sample of OECD countries. Specifically, we consider a set of individual characteristics that account for changes in the income distribution and estimate their contribution to differences in inequality in large cities over the last two decades. We use a combination of reweighting techniques and recentered influence functions (RIF) to detect an upward trend…

Devolution in the U.S. Welfare Reform
The passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996 devolved responsibility for the design of welfare programs from the federal to state governments in the U.S. The strategies implemented to achieve some of the main goals of the reform might have had the effects of reducing the protection received by the most vulnerable households and increasing differences in benefit levels across states. We estima…

The effectiveness of minimum income benefits in poverty reduction in Spain
One of the greatest peculiarities of the Spanish system of minimum income benefits is its complex organisation. There is a wide variety of specific means‐tested benefits whose management and financing depend on the central government. They are designed to protect different contingencies, providing very different levels of protection. On the other hand, the general risk of poverty is covered by regional governments without any coordination and fin…
Measuring Social Welfare Gains in Social Assistance Programs
Multidimensional deprivation in heterogeneous rural areas
We analyse the changes in multidimensional deprivation in very heterogeneous rural areas in Spain during the 2008 economic crisis using multigroup latent class models. Counterfactual distributions are implemented to identify the factors behind the change in deprivation in the different areas. We find that the economic crisis negatively affected direct indicators of the living standards in rural areas. A wide range of differences appears when spec…

Evaluating social assistance reforms under programme heterogeneity and alternative measures of success
This article presents an assessment of welfare reforms under a framework of programme heterogeneity and alternative measures of success. The study focused on a specific programme – M adrid's Ingreso Madrileño de Integración ( M adrid Regional Government's Welfare Programme) – which comprises heterogeneous sub‐programmes. We tested whether work‐related sub‐programmes performed better than general activities aimed at improving life skills by analys…

Using the Associative Imagery Technique in Qualitative Health Research
The associative imagery technique is a qualitative tool with which researchers use carefully selected photographs or images to trigger participants' responses to explain difficult behavioral and social concepts. In this article, we describe the development and implementation of the associative imagery method in focus groups to understand the complex relationships between homecare workers and their clients as part of a larger health and safety int…
Pro-poor Economic Growth, Inequality and Fiscal Policy
Ayala L. and Jurado A. Pro-poor economic growth, inequality and fiscal policy: the case of Spanish regions, Regional Studies. This paper aims to discuss whether substantive differences exist in terms of the distribution of economic growth by income groups in Spanish regions. In order to do so, data from the Spanish Family Budget Surveys for various years are used to estimate growth incidence curves, decomposition models of poverty changes, and is…
Explaining welfare recidivism
The Role for Community-Based Participatory Research in Formulating Policy Initiatives
Although community-based participatory research (CBPR) can be effective in influencing policy, the process of formulating policy initiatives through CBPR is understudied. We describe a case study to illustrate how alliances among various community partners could be united to formulate policy directions. In collaboration with partners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health initiated a project aimed at improving health and safet…
What determines exit from social assistance in Spain
The aim of this article is two‐fold. Firstly, we try to identify the main socioeconomic characteristics that explain the dynamics of social assistance in Spain. Secondly, we carry out a number of tests to assess to what extent individual characteristics accounting for duration differ in the different types of exit from social assistance. Analysis of periods on social assistance shows that belonging to an ethnic minority and employability are the …
