Ancestral Spirits
During the 1930s, a number of black writers plumbed the meaning of this past in the making of a black presence in modern North America. Black religious practices, as this chapter will show, remained especially significant as the ongoing effort to imagine a racial aesthetic enlisted a variety of ancestral spirits.
