When from Technology Comes Beauty
The glass-gem collection at the National Archeological Museum of Aquileia (Italy) was recently studied by in-depth archaeometric investigation campaigns, which are still running. Some objects in this very rich collection were characterized by performing a completely non-destructive analysis. In order to enhance our knowledge of Heritage Science, specific educational paths were designed, which, in one case, were already tested in a summer school i…
The earliest evidence of blue pigment use in Europe
Blue pigments are absent in Palaeolithic art. This has been ascribed to a lack of naturally occurring blue pigments or low visual salience of these hues. Using a suite of archaeometric approaches, the authors identify traces of azurite on a concave stone artefact from the Final Palaeolithic site of Mühlheim-Dietesheim, Germany. This represents the earliest use of blue pigment in Europe. The scarcity of blue in Palaeolithic art, along with later p…
Provenance attribution of lapis lazuli rocks processed at the Bronze age archaeological site of Shahr-i Sokhta (Iran)
Why is it so difficult to work on geochemical composition? Supervised geochemical composition data processing to study colouring iron oxide-rich rocks in archaeological contexts
A new methodology for incorporating weathering products into analyses of prehistoric pictorial matter
A comparative compositional study of Egyptian glass from Amarna with regard to cobalt sources and other colourants
A selection of Late Bronze Age glass objects from the site of Amarna (Egypt) was analysed for their overall chemical composition, colourants and transition metals associated with the sources of cobalt ore. The objects were analysed by means of Particle Induced X-Ray and Gamma-ray Emission and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry at the IBC, HZDR, Dresden and the New AGLAE facility, C2RMF, Paris. The data was subsequently compared with further m…
First provenance evidence for lapis lazuli artefacts from Arabia
A multianalytical approach for the study of relief polychrome glazed ceramics (France, 19th century)
Improved discrimination of biogenic and diagenetic elements in Palaeolithic mammoth ivory and bone from Hohle Fels Cave in the Swabian Jura of Southwestern Germany
Mammoth ivory was used by humans to manufacture personal ornaments, sculptures or music instruments during the Upper Palaeolithic. These objects are among the first and most precious witnesses of ancient artistic behaviour. Archaeological ivory, however, has been subjected to complex alteration processes due to exchange with its burial environment over time. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the diagenetic phenomena in order to develop ade…

Chemical and Mechanical Characterisation of White Earthenware Glazes from the Johnston‐Vieillard Manufactory (France, 19th Century)
This paper aims to apprehend evolution of ceramic manufacture strategy in the Johnston‐Vieillard manufactory (Bordeaux, France), which produced white earthenwares between 1835 and 1895. Glazes of fragments of 76 sherds, dated from different periods of the 19th century and found in excavations were characterised thanks to combined chemical and mechanical analysis. A comparative study was carried out for the determination of boron content in glazes…
Technological investigation on ceramic bodies of 19th century French white earthenware from the Bordeaux region
Tracing the trade of heirloom beads across Zomia
This chapter summaries a recent compositional study of ethnographic heirloom beads from several ethnic groups in upland northeast India and Southeast Asia, a geographic region sometimes known as Zomia. The beads were analysed using X-ray emission (PIXE) and can be classified into three groups: potash-lime (K-Ca), soda-lime (Na-Ca), and a third group that may be a mixture of these two glass types. We find that all three glass types appear to have …
Polychromy Analysis on Cypriot Archaic Statues by Non- and Micro-Invasive Analytical Techniques
The polychromy of limestone and terracotta statues from Cyprus attributed to the sixth to fifth centuries bc is analysed using non- and micro-invasive techniques in order to shed light on the use of pigments during the studied period. The strengths and limitations of these methods for the present application are discussed. The identified pigments are iron-containing compounds (red, yellow, green earths and iron–manganese black). No copper-contain…
