Analysis of potential barriers for PrEP non-users among PrEP-eligible MSM in Germany
Educational differences in mental health-related quality of life during the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany
Objectives: A large body of evidence shows poorer mental health among lower socioeconomic groups, with chronic stress being an important pathway in this relationship. It was expected that the mental health of people with low socioeconomic status may have been particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While it has been established that stress also impacted mental health during the pandemic, the aim of this study was to analyze if pandemic-in…
Individual- and area-level socioeconomic inequalities in cancer incidence in the working-age population – a cohort study based on German statutory health insurance data, 2015 to 2019
Our findings suggest that strategies to prevent cancer in the working-age population should take more account of the unequal structural conditions in which people work and live. The study shows that area-level socioeconomic deprivation has explanatory power for unequal cancer risks beyond the individual characteristics of socioeconomic position
Temporal dynamics of socioeconomic inequalities in depressive and anxiety symptoms during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The existence of socioeconomic inequalities in the prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety is widely acknowledged, and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds tend to exhibit higher rates of symptoms. However, the direction in which the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced these disparities remains uncertain. We therefore aimed to systematically outline the available evidence on the temporal dynamics of socioeconomic ine…
Socioeconomic inequalities in pandemic-induced psychosocial stress in different life domains among the working-age population
Socioeconomic inequalities in PIPS were found for different life domains. Generally, psychosocial support and preventive interventions to help people cope with stress in a pandemic context should be target-group-specific, addressing the particular needs and circumstances of certain socioeconomic groups
Corona Monitoring Nationwide (RKI-Soep-2)
SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus, spread across Germany within just a short period of time. Seroepidemiological studies are able to estimate the proportion of the population with antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 infection (seroprevalence) as well as the level of undetected infections, which are not captured in official figures. In the seroepidemiological study Corona Monitoring Nationwide (RKI-SOEP-2), biospecimens and interview data were collected in a …
Monitoring Health Inequalities in 12 European Countries
To raise awareness about health inequalities, a well-functioning health inequality monitoring system (HIMS) is crucial. Drawing on work conducted under the Joint Action Health Equity Europe, the aim of this paper is to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses in current health inequality monitoring based on lessons learned from 12 European countries and to discuss what can be done to strengthen their capacities. Fifty-five statements were used to …
Socioeconomic differences in the reduction of face-to-face contacts in the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany
Our results indicate disadvantages for groups with lower socioeconomic status in private and professional contact reductions in the first wave of the pandemic. This may be associated with the higher risk of infection among individuals in lower socioeconomic groups. Preventive measures that a) adequately explain the importance of contact restrictions with respect to varying living and working conditions and b) facilitate the implementation of thes…
Association of regional socioeconomic deprivation and rurality with global developmental delay in early childhood
Family SEP and regional deprivation are risk factors for child development and of particular interest to promote health of children in early childhood and over the life course
Socioeconomic position and Sars-CoV-2 infections
BACKGROUND: Evidence on the relationship between socioeconomic position (SEP) and infections with SARS-CoV-2 is still limited as most of the available studies are ecological in nature. This is the first German nationwide study to examine differences in the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infections according to SEP at the individual level. METHODS: The 'CORONA-MONITORING bundesweit' (RKI-SOEP) study is a seroepidemiological survey among a dynamic cohort of th…
Subjective social status and health
Since the early 2000s, evidence has been accumulating that subjective social status - a person's sense of their own position on the social ladder - affects health above and beyond objective socioeconomic status. To date, however, little is known about how these distinct health effects of subjective social status can be explained. This article narratively reviews different explanatory approaches and key methodological challenges, backed up by empi…
Socioeconomic Inequalities in Health and Perceived Unmet Needs for Healthcare among the Elderly in Germany
Research into health inequalities in the elderly population of Germany is relatively scarce. This study examines socioeconomic inequalities in health and perceived unmet needs for healthcare and explores the dynamics of health inequalities with age among elderly people in Germany. Data were derived from the Robert Koch Institute's cross-sectional German Health Update study. The sample was restricted to participants aged 50-85 years ( n = 11,811).…
Changing educational inequalities in sporting inactivity among adults in Germany
The findings suggest that the gap in sports participation between adults with high and low educational attainment has widened in both absolute and relative terms because of an increase in sports participation among the better educated. Health-enhancing physical activity interventions specifically targeted to less-educated younger adults are needed to prevent future increases in social inequalities in health
Environmental Noise Annoyance and Mental Health in Adults
The health implications of environmental noise, especially cardiovascular effects, have been studied intensively. Research on associations between noise and mental health, however, has shown contradictory results. The present study examined associations between individual levels of noise annoyance due to noise from various sources in the living environment and mental health of adults in Germany. It evaluated whether these associations persisted a…
Determinants of health check attendance in adults
The findings of this study suggest that people with an unfavourable risk factor profile, such as socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, smokers, physically inactive people, and persons with a low fruit and vegetable intake, are less likely to have health checks than those with a more favourable risk profile. Health checks carried out in the primary care setting should be evaluated for their effects on population health and health inequality
