The security–efficiency trade-off in ransomware networks
Ransomware groups pose a threat to both the economy and national security, yet little is known about their structural dynamics. This study analyses the Conti group using leaked Jabber encrypted instant messaging chat data (similar to Messenger) and Relational Event Models to examine how preferential attachment and triadic closure mechanisms shape its communication network. Findings show Conti prioritised efficiency through centralisation but miti…
Adapting Longitudinal Personal Network Research Through Participation
Longitudinal personal network studies make unique contributions to understanding how social contexts evolve. These studies have primarily been conducted in structured environments, such as hospitals, schools, workplaces, or large urban populations, where participants are easily reached, and standardized tools can be applied. These conditions differ from those in rural communities, where services are scarce, commuting is a part of daily life, and …
Co-Offending Networks of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs
Approaches to the study of OMCGs tend to focus on offending at the individual level, with limited focus on the nature and extent of co-offending among these affiliates. This project examines the positioning of OMCG affiliates in co-offending network structures by examining changes in actor advancements in organizational ranks over time . The de-identified data includes crime/arrest incident data for affiliates of OMCGs , including their rank and …
Beyond linearity and time-homogeneity
Technological advances enable the collection of many types of complex, dynamic, relational hyperevents. Despite the complexity of the data, most current Relational Hyper Event Models (RHEMs) use simple linear effects to describe the event rates. We extend the RHEM in order to allow non-linear effects that vary over time by using tensor product smooths. We validate our method on both synthetic and empirical data, examining evolving patterns and th…

The dynamics of criminal collaboration
This study examines how social embeddedness and multiplex relationships shape criminal collaboration within organized crime networks. Drawing on data from three major investigations into the ‘Ndrangheta, we analyze how kinship, clan affiliation, leadership, and prior interactions influence participation in meetings and phone calls. Using relational hyperevent models, we assess the dynamic and multiplex nature of these networks across time and inv…
Investigating the Dynamics of Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Co-Offending Networks
Offence versatility among co-offenders
Research examining co-offending has become increasingly popular over the last two decades. Despite this, there remains a dearth of research examining the dynamics of co-offending across time, largely due to limited access to longitudinal data. In the current paper we are interested in explaining crime versatility, and therefore we employ Relational Hyperevent Models (RHEM) to model the conditional probability that a given group of co-offenders en…

Dynamic network analysis of contact diaries
Analyzing two-mode networks linking actors to events they attend may help to uncover the structure and evolution of social networks. This classic social network insight is particularly valuable in the analysis of data extracted from contact diaries where contact events produce — and at the same time are the product of relations among participants. Contact events may comprise any number of actors meeting at a specific point in time. In this paper …

On Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Networks in a Multilayered Reality
Over the last decade, the tourist destination of Lloret de Mar (Gerona, Spain) has experienced an increasing concentration of souvenir stores owned by a population of Indian origin. Although Lloret de Mar is already a multicultural spot, Indians represent a small minority in Spain. In order to explain such a remarkable concentration and economic specialization in a low profit sector, we suggest the emergence of an ethnic enclave based on a triple…
Longitudinal analysis of personal networks. The case of Argentinean migrants in Spain
Affect Control in International Interactions
This research tests the proposition that national leaders generate international interactions in the process of maintaining sentiments about nations and international actions. The analysis deals with 1,934 international incidents in which one of 25 Middle Eastern nations responded twice within four weeks to an instigation by another of the 25 nations. Quantitative predictions from affect control theory correlate significantly with quantitative me…

A Statistical Study of the Impurity Occurrences in Copper Ores and Their Relationship to Ore Types
S A study of the impurity distributions in copper obtained from various ores shows no significant correlations between the impurity distributions. A test of 390 samples of copper obtained from various ores shows that more than 75% of copper samples can be correctly identified as coming from either simple copper metal ores, oxidized ores or more complex reduced ores thereby yielding information on the metallurgical capabilities of the society smel…
