Setting the scene Thirty years ago, almost exactly, I argued in my PhD thesis that, among the Tiwi, dance was kinship-in-action, not so much because it reflected kinship practices in other social domains - which it did - but because I observed on the dance floor kinship relationships being explored and new ones being generated. This essay is part of a broader book project: An anthropology of the elite that examines the political engagement of a family of performers in India, the Sarabhais. Here I engage with the work of Mrinalini Sarabhai and in greater detail with that of her daughter Mallika Sarabhai, specifically looking at her project of nonviolence through the arts. It situates her in her socio-economic background as a representative of an influential family, which set up the Darpana Academy for Performing Arts, an institute built on the Nehruvian philosophy of modernity. Dance anthropologists and ethnomusicologists are trained to treat the labels 'dance' and 'music' with caution, because the terms carry preconceptions that may mask significant aspects of the structured movement/sound systems they study.
