Rethinking Health in Later Life
Associations between structural holes in personal networks and health behaviors among young and middle-aged adults in Japan
Previous studies have emphasized that tightly knit networks influence health behaviors. However, effective network structures for behavioral adoption may vary by diffusion stage. This study examines how the association between personal network structures and health behaviors varies across behaviors with different prevalence degrees. We used data from the third-wave Japanese Study on Stratification, Health, Income, and Neighborhood (J-SHINE) condu…
Association between snack intake behaviors of children and neighboring women
The results suggest that the out-of-home physical and social neighborhood environments may have non-ignorable associations with children's dietary behaviors by offering behavioral opportunities in addition to maternal influence
Does disaster-related relocation impact mental health via changes in group participation among older adults? Causal mediation analysis of a pre-post disaster study of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake
Optimization of social ties according to a renewal of group participation status might have protected older adults in temporary housing against depression
Association between Happiness and Economic Status among Older Adults in Two Myanmar Regions
Few studies have examined whether objective or subjective economic status (ES) has a greater association with the happiness of older adults, despite concerns regarding the growing economic cost of morbidity and their functional dependence in developing countries with aging populations. Thus, this study examined whether objective/subjective ES was associated with happiness in older adults in two Myanmar regions. A multistage random sampling proced…
Effectiveness of a community organizing intervention on mortality and its equity among older residents in Japan
Interventions that involve key aspects of community organizing, such as quantitative community assessments and organizational partnership support for the community, may promote residents' health. We evaluated the effectiveness of this form of intervention on mortality and its variability across individual-level household equivalized income tertiles, comparing 52,858 residents aged 65 and above in 12 intervention municipalities to 39,006 residents…
Parks/sports facilities in local communities and the onset of functional disability among older adults in Japan
Rural–Urban Differences in the Factors Affecting Depressive Symptoms among Older Adults of Two Regions in Myanmar
The aim of the study was to investigate rural-urban differences in depressive symptoms in terms of the risk factors among older adults of two regions in Myanmar to provide appropriate intervention for depression depending on local characteristics. This cross-sectional study, conducted between September and December, 2018, used a multistage sampling method to recruit participants from the two regions, for face-to-face interviews. Depressive sympto…
Time preference and personal value
There may be an association between time preference and personal values. Time discounting and hyperbolic time discounting may be associated with different aspects of personal values, i.e., area of priority values and commitment to value, respectively
Smoking behavior prevalence in one's personal social network and peer's popularity
Modal Shift from Cars and Promotion of Walking by Providing Pedometers in Yokohama City, Japan
Mobility management is a transportation policy aiming to change travel behavior from car use to sustainable transportation modes while increasing people's physical activity. Providing pedometers and visualizing step counts, popular interventions in public health practice, may constitute a mobility management program. However, the ease of modal shifts and changeability of walking habits differ across neighborhood environments. Using questionnaire …
Social Capital and the Improvement in Functional Ability among Older People in Japan
We investigated the contextual effects of community social capital on functional ability among older people with functional disability in Japan, and the cross-level interaction effects between community social capital and individual psychosocial characteristics. We used data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study for 1936 men and 2207 women nested within 320 communities and followed for 46 months. We used objective data for functional abi…
Socioeconomic status and improvement in functional ability among older adults in Japan
There are education-related inequalities in the improvement of functional ability, especially among older adults with severe disabilities. Health policy makers and practitioners should consider the educational background of individuals with reduced functionality in formulating strategies to improve their functional ability
Effectiveness of community organizing interventions on social activities among older residents in Japan
Social activities in the community help older adults maintain functional ability. Community organizing, based on the assessment of health risks, community assets, and fostering intersectoral organizational partnerships, could increase participation opportunities. Supporting municipality staff members in building their capacity to take those actions might benefit them. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of such support remains unclear. This real-worl…
Education and indoor smoking among parents who smoke
Perceived smoking norms, household smoking status, and a worksite smoking ban could be vital targets of a strategy aimed at reducing the socioeconomic disparity in parental home smoking behaviours
Community social capital and inequality in depressive symptoms among older Japanese adults
Although studies have suggested that community social capital contributes to narrow income-based inequality in depression, the impacts may depend on its components. Our multilevel cross-sectional analysis of data from 42,208 men and 45,448 women aged 65 years or older living in 565 school districts in Japan found that higher community-level civic participation (i.e., average levels of group participation in the community) was positively associate…

The Impact of Crime on Social Ties and Civic Participation
The present study examined associations of neighbourhood crime with residents' social ties and civic participation using multilevel models. We hypothesized that crime is indirectly associated with residents' low civic participation by negatively relating to their acquaintanceship ties because of fear of neighbours. By contrast, we predicted that crime is indirectly related to frequent civic participation by positively associating with more intima…
Combined effects of eating alone and living alone on unhealthy dietary behaviors, obesity and underweight in older Japanese adults
We examined whether eating alone is associated with dietary behaviors and body weight status, and assessed the modifying effects of cohabitation status in older Japanese people. Data from the 2010 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, with a self-reported questionnaire for 38,690 men and 43,674 women aged ≥65 years, were used. Eating status was classified as eating with others, sometimes eating alone, or exclusively eating alone. We calculated a…
First Precepts for Democracy and Research Practices in Ethnic Studies
Recent discussions by leading scholars in interdisciplinary fields, notably cultural studies, suggest the limitations of critique for producing intelligent practices for social change and have called for thinking anew about the practices of intellectual labor. In this essay, I call attention to research methodology as a form of intellectual labor and examine the importance of explicit methodological and critical research practices in interdiscipl…
Differences in spousal influence on smoking cessation by gender and education among Japanese couples
Our findings suggest that a spouse's smoking status is important for smoking cessation interventions in men. For women, however, a couple's combined educational attainment may matter in the interventions
Social participation and mental health
Our findings support the notion that increasing the opportunities for social participation improves older people's heath, especially for women. However, in the rural Japanese context, offering men meaningful roles within organizations may be important
Social disorganization/social fragmentation and risk of depression among older people in Japan
Neighborhood social capital and crime victimization
