  • Technological variability and raw material procurement in the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian

    Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Sergio Martín-Jarque et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the lithic assemblage from Level G1 of El Cierro Cave (northern Spain), attributed to the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian. The study comprises 2,829 items, including 2,800 knapped artefacts, six macrolithic tools and 23 unmodified pebbles. Lithic procurement is dominated by flint, followed by quartzite and minor amounts of quartz. Eleven flint types have been identified, with local raw materials prevai…

  • New Evidence for Late Glacial Shellfishing Seasonality and Coastal Environments in Atlantic Europe from Shell δ 18 O values

    A Marchán-Fernández, Asier García-Escárzaga et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2025•Referências: 33

[EN] In recent decades, the role of marine resources in prehistoric hunter-gatherer diets has been widely debated. While some scholars propose that shellfish served as an emergency food supply during resource scarcity, others highlight their broader nutritional benefits. This paper applies δ18O analyses to Patella vulgata Linnaeus, 1758 shells from Cuevona de Ardines and El Cierro caves (Asturias, Spain) to determine seasonal patterns in shellfis…

  • Unravelling Subsistence and Territorial Management Strategies in the Upper Solutrean at El Cierro Cave (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)

Rodrigo Portero, Mikelo Elorza et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

[EN]The Solutrean period in Cantabrian Spain runs from between ca. 24 and 19.5 ky cal BP, that is from the Heinrich Event 2 to the early part of Greenland Stadial-2b. El Cierro cave (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain) presents one of the most complete Upper Palaeolithic stratigraphical sequences in northern Spain; it has two levels (Cierro H2 and H1) dated by radiocarbon ca. 22 ky cal BP that contain abundant biotic and abiotic remains. In this paper …

    Open Access•Sergio Martín-Jarque, Margarita Vadillo Conesa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

The lithic assemblage studied here comes from Cova Rosa, one of the main Upper Palaeolithic sites in Asturias (northern Spain). The remains were found in Layer B5, which was excavated by F. Jordá Cerdá and A. Gómez Fuentes in 1978 and are associated with an osseous assemblage and archaeozoological remains. This occupation has been dated by radiocarbon to about 16,400 BP ( ca . 19.8–19.6 ka cal BP), corresponding to Archaic/Lower Magdalenian. The …

Open Access•Rodrigo Portero, Marián Cueto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 4•Referências: 34

El Cierro Cave (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain) possesses one of the most complete Upper Palaeolithic stratigraphic sequences in northern Spain. Magdalenian occupations, particularly the lower Magdalenian, are well represented in its full sequence. This article presents the zooarchaeological analysis of the levels Cierro G1, Cierro G and Cierro F, dated by 14 C to between 20,000 and 17,000 cal BP. The remains correspond to vertebrates (mainly large…

    Open Access•David Álvarez-Alonso, Juan Carlos Díez Fernández-Lomana et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 14

The stratigraphy and materials from a survey carried out in 1994 and 1995 in a rock-shelter in Tamajón (southwestern Iberian Central Range) are studied here. The Pleistocene deposits were generated by high-energy channelled fluvial flows and dense currents of debris flow and mud flow type. The recovered lithic industry, created mainly in low-quality local materials, can be associated with Gravettian technocomplexes. Three radiocarbon dates obtain…

  • Study of the access routes to the Castilian plateau through the Sella River valley (Asturias, Spain) during the end of the Upper Palaeolithic

Open Access•Manuel Amalio Válles Fernández, Mario Menéndez Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Referências: 3

The Sella River valley (Asturias, Spain) has been and is currently a benchmark in Palaeolithic discoveries and research. The location and the number of archaeological sites along its orography certify a significant human presence in the valley throughout all of Prehistory. The mobility that these human groups exercised and developed along the fluvial valley and its geographical location, invites the study of access routes to the exploitation of e…

  • Radiocarbon Dates for the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Occupations of Cova Rosa (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)

In this study we present evidence of braided plant fibres and basketry imprints on clay recovered from Coves de Santa Maira, a Palaeolithic-Mesolithic cave site located in the Mediterranean region of Spain. The anatomical features of these organic fibre remains were identified in the archaeological material and compared with modern Stipa tenacissima (esparto grass). Open Access•Lidia Cabello, Pedro Cantalejo-Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Munibe Antropologia-Arkeologia•2020

The Malalmuerzo cave (Moclín, Granada, Spain) has been known since the 1980s for its archaeological remains and rock art, dated to the Neolithic and the Solutrean periods respectively. However, following thirty years of neglect, our team carried out a brief archaeological intervention after looters destroyed parts of the sediment fill of the cave. The refreshing of disturbed surfaces and the examination of a small undisturbed profile produced man…

This point of view assumes that the post-Last Glaical Maximum (LGM) climatic change brought about a certain restructuring of the mammal fauna and exerted a direct influence by flooding the changing coastal plain and submerging c…

Carnivore damage on Neanderthal fossils is a much more common taphonomic modification than previously thought. Its presence could have different explanations, including predatory attacks or scavenging scenarios, which are both situations with important implications concerning Neanderthal behaviour. In the present paper, we analyse several Neanderthal hominin fossils from a taphonomic and forensic perspective in order to infer the nature of the mo…
