Achieving the “Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S.” incidence reduction goals among at-risk populations in the South
Our analysis indicates that it is possible to reach EHE goals. The largest reductions in HIV incidence can be achieved by increasing ART coverage among MSM and all race groups benefit regardless of differences in ART initiation by race. Improving ART coverage to > 90% should be prioritized with a particular emphasis on reaching NHB MSM. Such a focus will reduce the largest number of incident cases, reduce racial HIV incidence disparities among bo…

HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis, by Race and Ethnicity — United States, 2014–2016
Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with a daily, oral pill containing antiretroviral drugs is highly effective in preventing acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (1-4). The combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and emtricitabine (FTC) is the only medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for PrEP. PrEP is indicated for men and women with sexual or injection drug use behaviors that increase their…
Vital Signs
BACKGROUND: In 2014, approximately 40,000 persons in the United States received a diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with daily oral antiretroviral medication is a new, highly effective intervention that could reduce the number of new HIV infections. METHODS: CDC analyzed nationally representative data to estimate the percentages and numbers of persons in the United States, by transmission ri…
Incorporating Couples-Based Approaches into HIV Prevention for Gay and Bisexual Men
Attitudes and Program Preferences of African-American Urban Young Adults About Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
We elicited attitudes about, and service access preferences for, daily oral antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) from urban, African-American young men and women, ages 18-24 years, at risk for HIV transmission through their sexual and drug-related behaviors participating in eight mixed-gender and two MSM-only focus groups in Atlanta, Georgia. Participants reported substantial interest in PrEP associated with its perceived cost, effectiv…
Antiretroviral Preexposure Prophylaxis for Heterosexual HIV Transmission in Botswana
BACKGROUND: Preexposure prophylaxis with antiretroviral agents has been shown to reduce the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men; however, the efficacy among heterosexuals is uncertain. METHODS: We randomly assigned HIV-seronegative men and women to receive either tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (TDF-FTC) or matching placebo once daily. Monthly study visits were scheduled, and particip…
Perceptions of door-to-door HIV counselling and testing in Botswana
Prevalence of HIV infection in Botswana is among the highest in the world, at 23.9% of 15 - 49-year-olds. Most HIV testing is conducted in voluntary counselling and testing centres or medical settings. Improved access to testing is urgently needed. This qualitative study assessed and documented community perceptions about the concept of door-to-door HIV counselling and rapid testing in two of the highest-prevalence districts of Botswana. Communit…
Talking about sex in Botswana
Evaluations of the safety, effectiveness, and feasibility of HIV prevention interventions rely on self-reported sexual behaviour data. The accuracy of such data has sometimes been questioned. The absence of a so-called objective measure of sexual behaviour complicates this. Social desirability bias (SDB) is a key factor affecting the accuracy of self-reports. Individual, semi-structured interviews focusing on possible causes of and solutions to S…
The Global HIV/Aids Epidemic and Related Mental Health Issues
HIV/AIDS is one of the most devastating diseases that humanity has ever faced. Since the first clinical evidence of HIV/AIDS was reported in 1981, more than 60 million people have been infected with the virus and more than 20 million have died of AIDS. This article provides an overview of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic with a focus on its impact on sub-Saharan Africa and people of African descent in the United States
