South-to-south collaboration to strengthen the health workforce
Paediatric cardiovascular diseases have been referred to as diseases of injustice as access to care is inequitable globally. For example, Africa only has 78 cardiac centres, with 22 located in Sub-Saharan Africa. Most of these centres rely on visiting surgical teams to provide clinical care. While visiting surgical teams provide essential care, building a sustainable and locally run cardiac workforce in Africa is critical to addressing these ineq…
Water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash)
Despite some progress, universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) by 2030—a remit of Sustainable Development Goal 6—remains a distant prospect in many countries. Policy-makers and implementers of the WASH sector are challenged to track a new path. This research aimed to identify core orienting themes of the sector, as legacies of past processes, which can provide insights for its future. We reviewed global policy, science and p…
Risky responsibilities for rural drinking water institutions
The drinking water sector is off track to reach Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.1 with over a quarter of the world’s population lacking safe and reliable services. Policy approaches are shifting away from provision of access towards managing the multiple risks of water supply and quality. By considering how infrastructure, information, and institutional systems evolved in Bangladesh, this article identifies the unintentional consequences of …
Implications of transdisciplinarity for sustainability research
Unhealthy Landscapes
Anthropogenic land use changes drive a range of infectious disease outbreaks and emergence events and modify the transmission of endemic infections. These drivers include agricultural encroachment, deforestation, road construction, dam building, irrigation, wetland modification, mining, the concentration or expansion of urban environments, coastal zone degradation, and other activities. These changes in turn cause a cascade of factors that exacer…

Climate change and future populations at risk of malaria
Validation of malaria surveillance case reports
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim of the study was to investigate the quality of national malaria surveillance reports in the United Kingdom. DESIGN--Persons with malaria reported to the Malaria Reference Laboratory (MRL) in 1987 were contacted by post to verify existing records with respect to key variables. The MRL data set was then analysed for inaccuracies. SETTING--The study was confined to UK residents. PARTICIPANTS--602 persons with malaria in 1987…
Parasitic Diseases
This paper comprises 5 parts. Major policy issues raised by parasitic disease in relation to child mortality are addressed in the 1st part. Incomplete immunity and superinfection are outlined as 2 features of parasitic infections the consequences of which are to give a very high prevalence to the point that incidence becomes difficult to measure except in very young children. The diseases due to animal parasites may affect the survival of childre…

7. Total Social Costs ... THE INTERRELATION OF HEALTH AND IMPROVEMENTS The epidemiological basis for the prevention of infections related to water by improving supplies may be summarized in the following way. The general model is illustrated in figure 7.1. Under conditions of appalling water supply the amount of illness is A. Increasing the volume supplied will decrease the morbidity until a point is reached where no matter how much more water is…
