This chapter aims to show the conflict and contradiction in the attitudes of the wider society toward the women, its reflection in their ambiguous position in society, and its embodiment in the personal lives of the traders. Kinship, Life Cycle, and Education in Lusaka
Kinship relaions of educated and uneducated women change in the passage from childhood to adolescene, young adulthood, and maturity. Socioeconomic and demographic changes have caused a widening of kinship networks and individualizing the uses to which the kinship network is put in contemporary life. The training of indigenous women in hospital nursing is directly modelled on western services. Hence training does not address social problems attendant on implicit cultural conflict between indigenous and western healing systems and conceptualisations of illness.
