  • Purposiveness without Purpose

    David Weir, David R Weir•ARTICLE•Genre•2025

Right illiberalists and left illiberalists find common cause when they censure the teaching of art and literature on moral grounds. The philosopher Immanuel Kant dedicated his career to categorical clarification, exhaustively defining morality and aesthetics as separate realms of human activity. Today, right illiberalists and left illiberalists confuse or conflate the categories and conceive of aesthetics in morally instrumentalist terms, turning…

  • Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol

    Open Access•Alden L Gross, Sneha Mani et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

We advocate for the HCAP as a structured yet adaptable framework that prioritizes measurement precision and cultural relevance, while retaining sufficient uniformity to conduct statistical harmonization across settings. What makes an HCAP an HCAP is not a strict checklist of tests, but a commitment to rigorous, culturally respectful measurement of cognitive health in older adults around the world

  • Dried blood spot based biomarkers in the Health and Retirement Study

Open Access•J K Kim, Jessica Faul et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2024

INTRODUCTION: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) has collected biomarker data over multiple waves. Such data can help improve our understanding of health changes in individuals and the causal pathways related to health. There are, however, technical challenges to using the HRS dried blood spots (DBS) biomarker data due to changes over time in assay protocols, platforms, and laboratories. We provide technical and summary information on biologic…

  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • The Price of Playing Through Pain

Open Access•Evelyn Bush, Tim Cupery et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Men s Health•2020

Over the past decade, media outlets have drawn attention to some of the health consequences of playing in the National Football League (NFL), including how wear-and-tear and injuries accumulated during athletes’ playing years can affect their physical, emotional, and behavioral health after retirement from professional sports. Through a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional telephone survey of former NFL athletes, this study estimated logistic …

  • New alcohol-related genes suggest shared genetic mechanisms with neuropsychiatric disorders

Open Access•E Evangelou, He Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2019•Referências: 85

Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. Alcohol consumption is a heritable complex trait. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of gram/day (g/d) alcohol consumption in UK-Biobank, AlcGen and CHARGE+ consortia accumulating 480,842 people of European descent to decipher the genetic architecture of alcohol intake. We identified 46 novel, common loci, and investigate…

  • A Comparison of the Prevalence of Dementia in the United States in 2000 and 2012

Kenneth M Langa, Eric B Larson et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Internal Medicine•2017

Importance: The aging of the US population is expected to lead to a large increase in the number of adults with dementia, but some recent studies in the United States and other high-income countries suggest that the age-specific risk of dementia may have declined over the past 25 years. Clarifying current and future population trends in dementia prevalence and risk has important implications for patients, families, and government programs. Object…

  • Widowhood and Depression in a Cross-National Perspective

Open Access•Apoorva Jadhav, David Weir et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2017•Citada por: 5•Referências: 8

Our research shows the complex global relationship between widowhood and depression. Studies that do not compare depression trajectories over time may make incorrect inferences about the persistence of depression by gender and country. Interventions should target different components of depression: mood-related symptoms for men and somatic-related symptoms for women for most effective recovery

  • Life Under Pressure

    Open Access•David R Weir•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1984•Citada por: 29•Referências: 9

Comparative methods are used to examine two hypotheses derived from Wrigley and Schofield's Population History of England. Contrary to their expectations, economic shocks produced greater marriage responses in France than in England, and the early onset of family limitation in France did not increase the responsiveness of marital fertility to living standards in the aggregate. Mortality was strongly dependent on economic shocks only in France pri…

  • Rather Never than Late

    Open Access•David R Weir•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•1984•Citada por: 19•Referências: 11

Most explanations of fertility change in preindustrial England empha size changes in age at marriage. This paper shows that, even after correcting for possible exaggerations in estimated celibacy rates, it was celibacy and not age at marriage that accounted for most of fertility variation before 1750. New research and new models of marriage behavior are needed. It may be necessary to abandon homeostasis to arrive at an adequate explanation of Eng…

  • Parental Consumption Decisions and Child Health During the Early French Fertility Decline, 1790–1914

    Open Access•David R Weir•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1993•Citada por: 18•Referências: 5

This article re-examines the secular improvement in human heights in France. Adult heights reflect consumption as children, so the distribution of resources between children and adults, determined primarily within households, should have influenced heights. The intrahousehold distribution of resources was influenced by the level of income and by the calorie demands of working adults. Results show that the early decline of marital fertility in Fra…

  • Cohort parity analysis

    Open Access•Paul A David, Thomas A Mroz et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1988•Citada por: 17•Referências: 16

Cohort parity analysis (CPA) is a method for indirect measurement of the extent and timing of the adoption of fertility control within marriage. It uses information on the parity distribution of a cohort of women of specified marriage ages and durations. A multinomial model of parity provides a convenient framework for the computation of distributional parameters describing the extent to which marital fertility control has been accepted and chara…

  • New Estimates of Nuptiality and Marital Fertility in France, 1740-1911

    David R Weir•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1994•Citada por: 14

This paper produces new annual estimates of the Princeton indices of overall fertility, nuptiality, marital, and non-marital fertility for France from 1740 to 1911. To do so, it first develops a method to reconstruct (back-project) a closed female population by age (above age 10) and marital status from a good terminal census and registration data on deaths and marriages by age and marital status. The new estimates differ somewhat from those of v…

    Open Access•François R Velde, David R Weir•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1992•Citada por: 12•Referências: 17

This article offers a new quantitative history of the market for government debt in France before the Revolution. The monarchy was a persistent default risk because of institutional obstacles to raising taxes. Default followed observable rules in targeting specific assets. The financial market reflected both facts: interest rates were high on the safest assets and ranged higher on the most likely default targets. The cost of all forms of new borr…

  • Structural Change in Life Cycle Fertility During the Fertility Transition

    Thomas A Mroz, David R Weir•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1990•Citada por: 10

This paper explores the hypothesis that the fertility transition in France entailed a structural change in behaviour from natural to controlled fertility. We define the hypothesis in terms of an empirically estimable model of lifetime fertility. The model produces separate estimates of the three main proximate determinants: the hazard rate of conception for ovulating women, the timing of ovulation resumption after a birth, and permanent sterility…
