The language of "data collection" is perpetuated by disciplinary practices, as well as a pedagogical motivation to make data collection practices teachable to new generations of qualitative researchers. The aunt in contemporary Anglo-American culture is a deserving though oft-overlooked cultural identity for critical feminist analysis. This article examines selected performances of aunting in contemporary U.S. popular culture to illustrate how the cultural work of aunting articulates both dominant and transgressive constructions of family, care, kinship, and feminine agency. We conceptualize bitching as an ambivalent communicative practice that takes place in and contributes to the construction of gendered organizational identities. We argue that a woman's decision to breast‐feed or not is overdetermined by two discursive complexes we label “the romance of the natural mother” and “the science of breast‐feeding.” These complexes incorporate socio‐historical articulations of motherhood, female sexuality, medicine, science, and advertising.
