Africa in the Present Moment of World Unmaking
We are unmistakably entering a new epoch of world unmaking—one in which the United States is losing its grip as the global center of gravity. This marks a sharp departure from the era of US -dominated unipolarity that has defined international order since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It is therefore worth asking what this moment means for the African continent, not least because the fate of more than a billion people turns on the ans…

The Racial Wealth Gap in South Africa and the United States
We present evidence on the Black–White Racial Wealth Gap in South Africa and compare it to the well-known patterns of the same gap in the United States. We find that the patterns in the overall racial wealth gap are similar between the two countries. In South Africa, the typical Black household owns 5 per cent of the wealth held by the typical White household. In the US, the typical Black household owns 6 per cent of the wealth held by the typica…
Identity Group Stratification, Political Economy & Inclusive Economic Rights
This essay demonstrates the necessity of formally incorporating identity group stratification as a pillar alongside economic and political understandings of any political economy framework. Much of this debate, however, proceeds with little by way of evidence in demonstrating whether such an underrepresentation actually exists in the first place. In this paper, I look at the patterns of authorship over the period 2005–2015 in 'leading' economics journals that publish regularly on Africa. I find that, o…

Price, tax and tobacco product substitution in Zambia
This study affirms that increasing cigarette tax with corresponding price increases could significantly reduce cigarette use in Zambia. Furthermore, reducing between-product price differences would reduce substitution from FM to RYO. Since RYO use is associated with lower socioeconomic status, efforts to decrease RYO use, including through tax/price approaches and cessation assistance, would decrease health inequalities in Zambian society and red…

Evaluating South Africa's tobacco control policy using a synthetic control method
Significant public health dividends can be obtained by consistently increasing the real tax on cigarettes
Cigarette price and other factors associated with brand choice and brand loyalty in Zambia
These results in Zambia document the high levels of brand loyalty in a market where price variation is fairly small across cigarette brands. Future research is needed on longitudinal trends to evaluate the effect of tobacco control policies in Zambia
