Serum IGF‐I in middle age covaries with reproductive life‐history traits in british men and women
OBJECTIVES: The growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF-I) axis may be an important component of individual life-history variation. This study examined whether IGF-I levels covary with reproductive life-history traits in a long-term British cohort study (the National Child Development Study). METHODS: Using data on up to 5,252 individuals (2,431 men and 2,821 women) born in March 1958, relationships of serum IGF-I at age 45 with puber…
The adaptive basis of psychosocial acceleration
Four of the articles published in this special section of Developmental Psychology build on and refine psychosocial acceleration theory. In this short commentary, we discuss some of the adaptive assumptions of psychosocial acceleration theory that have not received much attention. Psychosocial acceleration theory relies on the behavior of caregivers being a reliable cue of broader ecological conditions and on those ecological conditions being som…
Climatic signatures in crops and grain prices in 19th-century Sweden
Climate and weather variation affect agricultural productivity, with consequences for both overall food availability and the wider economy. Knowledge of these processes has implications for understanding historical demography and predicting effects of climate change on societies. We studied the relationships between ambient temperature and the yields and prices of principle grains (wheat, rye, barley oats) in Sweden from 1803 to 1914. We found th…
Elder brothers affect the life history of younger siblings in preindustrial humans
Offspring are lighter at birth and smaller in adulthood when born after a brother versus a sister in humans
Kanazawa's ‘generalized Trivers-Willard hypothesis’ and the heritability of offspring sex-ratio
The ‘generalized Trivers-Willard hypothesis’ (gTWH) proposes that heritable traits associated with reproductive success of one sex will be positively associated with a genetic tendency to produce offspring of that sex. However, unlike the original Trivers-Willard hypothesis, the predictions of gTWH are proposed to be borne out regardless of environmental conditions. This is a problem because it ignores the influence of the hypothetical genetic va…
