The implications of three major new trials for the effect of water, sanitation and hygiene on childhood diarrhea and stunting
BACKGROUND: Three large new trials of unprecedented scale and cost, which included novel factorial designs, have found no effect of basic water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions on childhood stunting, and only mixed effects on childhood diarrhea. Arriving at the inception of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and the bold new target of safely managed water, sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030, these results warrant t…
Burden of disease from inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene for selected adverse health outcomes
BACKGROUND: To develop updated estimates in response to new exposure and exposure-response data of the burden of diarrhoea, respiratory infections, malnutrition, schistosomiasis, malaria, soil-transmitted helminth infections and trachoma from exposure to inadequate drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene behaviours (WASH) with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: For each of the analysed diseases, exposure levels with both suffici…
Impact of drinking water, sanitation and handwashing with soap on childhood diarrhoeal disease
The Effect of India's Total Sanitation Campaign on Defecation Behaviors and Child Health in Rural Madhya Pradesh
BACKGROUND: Poor sanitation is thought to be a major cause of enteric infections among young children. However, there are no previously published randomized trials to measure the health impacts of large-scale sanitation programs. India's Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) is one such program that seeks to end the practice of open defecation by changing social norms and behaviors, and providing technical support and financial subsidies. The objective…

Climate change and the emergence of vector-borne diseases in Europe
This risk assessment study is likely to be a valuable tool assisting effective and targeted adaptation responses to reduce the likely increased burden of dengue fever in a warmer world
Water source and diarrhoeal disease risk in children under 5 years old in Cambodia
Our study suggests that 1001 F water provides a safer alternative to groundwater or surface water. Furthermore, our study raises serious concerns about the validity of assuming protected groundwater to be safe water for the purposes of assessing the MDG targets. By contrast our study provides addition evidence of the relative safety of rainwater harvesting

Investigating Vietnam’s Ornamental Bird Trade
Impact on diarrhoeal illness of a community educational intervention to improve drinking water quality in rural communities in Puerto Rico
Educational interventions directed both at identified individuals and the community in general in small communities with poor water quality is a way of giving communities the skills and knowledge to manage their own drinking water quality. This may also have important and sustainable health benefits, though further research preferably using a randomised control trial design is needed
Communication, perception and behaviour during a natural disaster involving a 'Do Not Drink' and a subsequent 'Boil Water' notice
Higher non-compliance during the 'Do Not Drink' notice was traced to the public's limited knowledge of water notices and their folk beliefs about the protection offered from boiling water. We suggest that future information dissemination plans reduce reliance on official leaflets and maximise the potential of local media and personal networks. Current public health education programmes are recommended to attend to insufficient and incorrect publi…
Apparent Benefit of Water Filters May Be an Artifact of Study Design
Colford et al. should be congratulated on an excellently conducted and presented study of the potential impact of filtering drinking water on gastrointestinal illness in older adults.1 There is, however, one issue that deserves further consideration. The study basically compared self-reported illness rates among people who were given an active and a sham water filter. The study was a crossover design in that people were randomized to have an acti…
Using infectious intestinal disease surveillance data to explore illness aetiology; a cryptosporidiosis case study
Infectious intestinal disease (IID) surveillance data are an under-utilised information source on illness geography. This paper uses a case study of cryptosporidiosis in England and Wales to demonstrate how these data can be converted into area-based rates and the factors underlying illness geography investigated. Ascertainment bias is common in surveillance datasets, and we develop techniques to investigate and control this. Rural areas, locatio…
Wildlife Trade and the Emergence of Infectious Diseases
Perceived causes of sporadic cryptosporidiosis and their relation to sources of information
Background: The importance of a person’s perceptions about the causes of their disease has been emphasised by research on various diseases. Several studies have found perception may be linked to protective behaviours. Objective: This study intends to identify the main perceived causes of sporadic cryptosporidiosis, and to analyse some of the factors that may influence respondent’s perception. The role of respondents’ attributions, the scientific …
Geographic correlation between deprivation and risk of meningococcal disease
The results suggest that area deprivation is a risk factor for meningococcal disease, and that its effects are seen most in young children
