Learner Corpora of Language for Specific Purposes
Over the past decade, several new learner corpora of language for specific purposes (LSP) have been compiled. In this entry, we review the various types of LSP learner corpora that can be used for research and teaching purposes, including language samples collected from LSP classes and disciplinary writing. We then examine the typical studies conducted using these corpora, identifying several important research gaps. Finally, we briefly review th…
Crowdsourced Comparative Judgement for Evaluating Learner Texts
Recent studies of proficiency measurement and reporting practices in applied linguists have revealed widespread use of unsatisfactory practices such as the use of proxy measures of proficiency in place of explicit tests. Learner corpus research is one specific area affected by this problem: few learner corpora contain reliable, valid evaluations of text proficiency. This has led to calls for the development of new L2 writing proficiency measures …

Exploring complexity at the lexis-grammar interface
Beyond the process
Complexity Is a “Markedly Complex Idea”—But How Complex Should It Be to Serve as a Useful Construct in Second Language Research
Over the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in studies exploring linguistic complexity in second and foreign (L2) languages. The scope of research has broadened to cover a wider range of L2s and domains of inquiry—including lexis, morphology, and phraseology alongside the traditional focus on syntactic complexity—accompanied by the development of automatic analysis tools. However, this expansion has brought about two key chal…
Adverb placement in L1 and L2 spoken production
Most existing research on adverb placement has focused exclusively on writing. This is unfortunate, given that the spoken mode offers limited opportunity for pre-planning and post-editing and may thus more readily reveal patterns of L1 transfer. Further, previous studies rarely consider the impact of the linguistic context surrounding the adverb. This study broadens our understanding of (i) the potential role of L1 transfer, and (ii) the extralin…
Animacy effects in the English genitive alternation
Recent years have seen a heightened interest in the interface between language use and cognition in language learners. In this study, we investigate this interface further by conducting a rating task experiment on the intuitions of 25 native speakers and 101 low–intermediate to advanced learners of English as a Foreign Language regarding the acceptability of the genitive variants ( the beauty of nature/nature’s beauty ) in different contexts. The…

Comparing the longitudinal development of phraseological complexity across oral and written tasks
This study builds upon previous research investigating the construct validity of phraseological complexity as an index of L2 development and proficiency. Whereas previous studies have focused on cross-sectional comparisons of written productions across proficiency levels, the current study compares the longitudinal development of phraseological complexity in written and oral productions elicited over a 21-month period from learners of French. We …
Proficiency at the lexis–grammar interface
This study investigates whether re-thinking the separation of lexis and grammar in language testing could lead to more valid inferences about proficiency across modes. As argued by Römer, typical scoring rubrics ignore important information about proficiency encoded at the lexis–grammar interface, in particular how the co-selection of lexical and grammatical features is mediated by communicative function. This is especially evident when assessing…
Crowdsourced Adaptive Comparative Judgment
The main objective of this Methods Showcase Article is to show how the technique of adaptive comparative judgment, coupled with a crowdsourcing approach, can offer practical solutions to reliability issues as well as to address the time and cost difficulties associated with a text-based approach to proficiency assessment in L2 research. We showcased this method by reporting on the methodological framework implemented in the Crowdsourcing Language…
Adverb placement in EFL academic writing
The present study looks at adverb placement in expert writing and in first-language and second-language novice spoken and written production. The extent to which first-language (L1) transfer is still present in advanced learners’ written production is also investigated. The study uses data from one expert corpus ( LOCRA ), two native-speaker student corpora ( BAWE and LOCNEC) and two learner corpora ( VESPA and LINDSEI). The results highlight the…
The phraseological dimension in interlanguage complexity research
This article reports on the first results of a large-scale research programme that aims to define and circumscribe the construct of phraseological complexity and to theoretically and empirically demonstrate its relevance for second language theory. Within this broad agenda, the study has two main objectives. First, it investigates to what extent measures of phraseological complexity can be used to describe second language (L2) performance at diff…
Electronic lexicography goes local
Writing idiomatic academic texts in English is a challenge faced by an increasing number of international students and scholars. In this article, we present a web-based dictionary-cum-writing aid tool, the Louvain English for Academic Purposes Dictionary, which aims to address the attested needs of non-native writers of English, with a particular focus on the phraseological patterning of academic words. First, we present the general design of the…
L1 frequency in foreign language acquisition
This study investigated French and Spanish EFL (English as a foreign language) learners’ preferred use of three-word lexical bundles with discourse or stance-oriented function with a view to exploring the role of first language (L1) frequency effects in foreign language acquisition. Word combinations were extracted from learner performance data (i.e. argumentative essays), and the frequency of their translation equivalent forms was analysed on th…
Lexical bundles and L1 transfer effects
This exploratory study makes use of Jarvis’s (2000) methodological framework to investigate transfer effects on French EFL learners’ use of lexical bundles. The study focuses on 3-word recurrent sequences that include a lexical verb in the French component of the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) as compared to nine other ICLE learner sub-corpora. Results are in line with a usage-based view of language that recognizes the active role…
Language for Specific Purposes Learner Corpora
Learner corpora are electronic collections of (near‐)natural foreign or second‐languagelearner (L2) language assembled according to explicit design criteria (Granger, 2008).
Disentangling the phraseological web
Although phraseology has recently begun to establish itself as a field in its own right, this process is being hindered by two main factors: the highly variable and wide-ranging scope of the field and the vast and confusing terminology associated with it. This chapter tackles these two issues successively in an attempt to disentangle the ‘phraseological web’. We first draw up a clear distinction between two major approaches to the study of multi-…
