  • Kitchen Table Pedagogy

Open Access•Jacqui Gingras, Lucy Aphramor et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Social Justice•2024•Referências: 3

The three of us (be)come together, yes on Zoom calls and in Google docs, and in a way that re-imagines the sitting together at a well-worn kitchen table to animate our current shared preoccupations. The table has seen many conversations before us, so it’s well-worn by feminist scholars who were also troubled, yearning, and adamant about leaving their marks. We have come to, become at, this type of table for centuries, sitting together preparing f…

  • Fat politics as a constituent of intersecting intimacies

    Open Access•Kimberly Dark, Lucy Aphramor•ARTICLE•Fat Studies•2023

In this paper we explore the ways in which fat politics shapes (our) fat-thin intimacies as friends, colleagues and occasional lovers. We are queer writers who are actively engaged in fat politics; one of us is fat and the other is thin. We are both poets, scholars, and performers, privileged by whiteness, and contingently read as non-disabled. This paper takes the form of alternating reflections where we explore the nuances of our thoughts and f…

  • Theorizing health at every size as a relational–cultural endeavour

Open Access•Jennifer Brady, Jacqui Gingras et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2013

Mainstream dietetics buttresses a conventional weight management agenda that is associated with weight preoccupation, body dissatisfaction, size oppression, and troubled eating. Coterminous with this agenda is healthism, which taken together, impede dietitians’ engagement with a health at every size (HAES) paradigm, a paradigm driven by concern for equality. Yet, HAES has also been critiqued for having healthist tendencies. The purpose of this pa…

  • Weight Science

    Open Access•Linda Bacon, Lucy Aphramor•ARTICLE•Nutrition Journal•2011

Current guidelines recommend that "overweight" and "obese" individuals lose weight through engaging in lifestyle modification involving diet, exercise and other behavior change. This approach reliably induces short term weight loss, but the majority of individuals are unable to maintain weight loss over the long term and do not achieve the putative benefits of improved morbidity and mortality. Concern has arisen that this weight focus is not only…

  • Disability and the anti‐obesity offensive

    Lucy Aphramor•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2009•Citada por: 10•Referências: 5

This paper expands a discussion begun by a fat activist in the UK disability literature to argue that fatness is a disability issue. Some ways in which fat people are oppressed by the same ideological practices and values that oppress (other) disabled people are explored. Fatness has typically been excluded from consideration by disability scholars and in this lacuna an equivalence is drawn between attitudes to fatness and psychological distress …
