Tham Pha Mue, a rock art site in Central Laos and potential stylistic connections in Mainland Southeast Asia
Saint-Michel d’Arudy (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France)
The Quotidian of the Symbolic’. Iconographic Changes Between Decorated Objects in Cantabrian Magdalenian Portable Art. A Multivariate Statistical Approach
Cantabrian portable art enjoys a long research tradition that has generated a vision of this phenomenon in which decoration seems to be determined by the type of artefact to be decorated and the context in which it participates. However, this conceptualization does not address the multiplicity of situations in which decorated objects were used. In the present work, both the iconographic variations in Cantabrian Magdalenian decorated objects and t…
Still no archaeological evidence that Neanderthals created Iberian cave art
The Palaeolithic cave art in Europe is specially concentrated in the Cantabrian, Pyrenean and Perigordian regions since the beginning of the research in the early twentieth century. Anyway, in the meeting point between them, where different exchanges should be taken place, there was an incomprehensible absence in the archaeological record, concerning symbolic activities.During the last fifteen years the discoveries of cave art have been exponenti…

Uranium–thorium dating method and Palaeolithic rock art
Magdalenian occupations between 20000 and 15000 cal BP in the Pyrenean foothills
Because of its rich record of Magdalenian sites, the Arudy Basin is a key case for the study of resettlement dynamics in the Pyrenean valleys after the Last Glacial Maximum. Interpretations are, however, hampered by the ancient age of many excavations. The recently acquired data from Laa 2 cave contribute to filling this gap, although the excavation of the Paleolithic layers was restricted to a very small surface. Layer C5 documents a very early …
Alkerdi is the only cave with Paleolithic rock art engravings known in the Regional Community of Navarre. Located in Pyrenean foothills, its discovery was carried out by the French speleologist N. Casteret in 1930, who published it briefly shortly after (1933). The detailed study of the engravings will not take place until several decades after, by I. Barandiarán (1974) who, in the last years, has excavated the archaeological deposit of the cavit…
De vuelta al punto de partida
La Peña de Candamo was discovered by the scientific community in 1914, being one of the first known caves in the Cantabrian region, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. The only monographic study of its parietal art was led and published by E. Hernández Pacheco in 1919, showing exceptional complexity and graphic density. In 2007, a new research project was launched to update all the information related to the cave’s parietal art fro…
Hornos de la Peña was one of the caves discovered at the beginnings of XXth century in the Cantabrian region, comprised in the classic work «Les Cavernes de la Région Cantabrique» (1911). As for the other caves studied in this work, the cave has not been re-studied again, only some punctual researches which did not supply the original. Recently, a partial revision of the parietal figures has been undertaken. This study applies the most recent met…
