The impact of audio versus audiovisual stimuli with or without face masking on judgements about different varieties of Asian English
This study explores ways in which multilingual English listeners react to and rate three varieties of Asian English in three presentational modes: audio only, audiovisual and audiovisual with a face mask. The current study examines the use of American English (AmE) pronunciation features among 68 English and English Language/English Education majors at an university in Hong Kong, a former British colony where British English has long been held in prestige. Sociolinguistic variation in Asian Englishes
This paper examines coronal stop deletion (CSD), the deletion of word-final /-t, -d/ in consonant clusters, in three new varieties of Asian English: China English, Hong Kong English, and Viet Nam English. The study seeks to determine to which extent the linguistic and extralinguistic constraints found to govern CSD in other varieties of English also impact CSD in emerging Englishes such as those examined in the current study. Previous research on /t,d/ deletion, the omission of the final /t/ or /d/ sound in word-final consonant clusters of two or more consonants (e.g. just pronounced as jus), indicates that it is pervasive in many varieties of English, including world Englishes such as Indian English, Singapore English, and Nigerian English.
