With or against the river? Tracing changes and relationships between social and ecological systems on the central Vistula floodplain over the last 200 years
Studying the relationship between humans and their environment is crucial for observing escalating human pressure. This article examines how two distinct rural communities, living side-by-side, coped with environmental crises during the 19th and 20th centuries. Our case study is Kazuń, a 19th-century settlement inhabited by Catholics and Protestants separated only by a lake, an old Vistula riverbed. Our analysis utilizes written archives (includi…
Human impacts on environment in the preindustrial forest landscapes in Poland—An overview
Quantification of human impact on past forest ecosystems becomes more challenging as one goes deeper into the past. This is primarily due to a scarcity of appropriate source materials. It is well-known that the inclusion of the Polish lands in the zone of economic ties with Western Europe at the end of the 15th century enabled the intensive export of cereal and forest products. In this article, we have used place names established before 1600 not…
Overcoming the crisis
Addressing multiple perspectives in studying environmental changes in forest landscapes during the modernization period (18th-19th centuries)
Combining different diverse data on human and environmental history during the Anthropocene is an extremely challenging task, particularly, if one wants to compare written or cartographic data with a whole range of environmental data recorded for more than the past 200-300 years. In this article, our objective was to demonstrate that one of the keys to facilitating syntheses for the study of forest landscape dynamics was to conduct a thorough inv…
Preboreal oscillation in the light of multiproxy analyses—Early Holocene in Lake Jelonek (North Poland)
In this work, we studied the course of climatic fluctuations at the beginning of the Preboreal period using multiproxy analyses (Chironomidae, pollen, diatoms, Cladocera, stable isotopes, macrocharcoal, microlithofacial) combined with varve chronology of sediments. The results showed a decrease in the mean July temperature and stronger continentalism followed by climate wetting at the start of the Preboreal period. This was reflected in the remod…
A novel multiproxy approach to detect the impact of charcoal production on the natural environment in NW Poland – project concept and preliminary results
Agriculture has been the major driver of deforestation in Europe in the last 1000 years. In the past, forests were also exploited for charcoal production; however, the spatial scale/extent of this activity and its impact are unknown. LIDAR data can be used as a noninvasive tool to investigate the small-scale diversity of the land relief, including forested areas. These data can reveal the extent anthropogenic modifications of topography present-d…
