Counterinsurgency by proxy
This article examines the criminalisation of the Kurdish freedom movement in Germany as a lens onto the transformation of citizenship by the counterterror state. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork including attendance at §129b trials, interviews with defence lawyers and Kurdish activists, and analysis of intelligence reports and court rulings, it traces how anti-terrorism legislation, association law, and migration and citizenship law converge to …
Spoils and treasures
This article examines the intertwining of war economies in eastern Turkey across different historical periods. It explores the connection between the Turkish state's war on the Kurdish freedom movement and the practice of hunting for "Armenian" treasures, highlighting war's role in creating new accumulation opportunities. The article looks at forms of intimacy that emerge between state representatives and local Kurds and analyzes them as sites of…
A Village, a Depot and a Grazing Ground
Sovereign extractions, extractive sovereignty
Within the broader context of a financialised supply-chain capitalism and the international governance of statehood in the wake of decolonisation and European integration, this special issue asks how sovereignty figures in relation to extraction at this conjuncture. In this introduction, we outline the issue's conceptual framework. We argue that sovereignty manifests as a space-making power, across different scales, which delineates and crafts va…
Renewing an 'Armenian' neighbourhood
Based on ethnographic research on an urban regeneration project targeting the historically Armenian quarter of a provincial capital in the Kurdish parts of Turkey, the article engages with two related, but separate strands of anthropological scholarship on the 'fragmented' nature of sovereignty to think through the relation of sovereignty and extraction. It does so, firstly, in relation to contemporary transformations of statecraft under conditio…
Surviving Hrant Dink
This article charts political and affective responses to and transformations engendered by what has been widely considered a defining moment in the recent history of Turkey, namely, the murder of the Armenian editor and journalist Hrant Dink on 19 January 2007. In this analysis, the question of time and temporality is approached from a threefold perspective: the availability of and engagement with temporal discourses that provide schemes for rela…
Treasure/Fetish/Gift
From Aggressive Humanism to Improper Mourning
In 2015, an artistic initiative brought the bodies of dead refugees from the border of ‘Europe’ to be buried in Berlin. This article analyses ‘The Dead Are Coming’ and examines its politics and aesthetics of mourning strangers within a context in which imaginaries of kinship define public responses to suffering and death. The campaign blurred the distinctions between life and death, kin and stranger, art and politics, to problematize the differen…
Not a German past to be reckoned with
In discussing the public commemoration of the Armenian genocide and the case of a Turkish refugee-turned-memory-activist in Germany, this article focuses on migrants as they mediate political concerns by reference to the German discourse and practice ofVergangenheitsbewältigung(confronting the past). Such engagements shed light on the intersection of a performative and inclusionary dimension of citizenship inscribed in the figure of the repentant…
