On desirous Pentecostalism in African cities
This article invokes the ‘sociology of desire' to examine how Pentecostal imaginations, faith, fantasy, and promises relate to African urbanites' visions and experiences of life in the city. This study draws on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in two African cities, Pretoria and Lagos. Connecting the notion of ‘desirous Pentecostalism' with that of ‘aspirational urbanism', this study argues that the Pentecostal promise—enshrined in the Word and a…
Architecturations of Pentecostal Power
This article examines Pentecostal architecture as an expression and apparatus of “Pentecostal power.” Referencing the “new” auditorium of the Deeper Christian Life Ministries in Gbagada, Lagos, the article analyzes the “architecturations”—expressions, materializations, and activations through iconic Pentecostal buildings—of Pentecostalism’s spatial, political, corporeal, symbolic, and economic power. This article coins and develops the concept of…
Africa’s Radicalisms and Conservatisms
With Africa as its point of reference and departure, this volume examines why and how the two concepts – radicalisms and conservatisms – should not be taken as mere binaries around which to organize knowledge. It demonstrates that these concepts have multiple and diverse meanings as perceived and understood from different disciplinary vantage points, hence, the deliberate pluralization of the terms. The essays show what happens when one juxtapose…
Pentecosmopolis
Based on ethnography conducted in Lagos, one of the foremost pentecostal cities in the world, this article coins the interconnected concepts of ‘Pentecosmopolis’ and ‘pentecosmopolitanism’ to account for forms of cosmopolitanism that are shaped at the intersection of Pentecostalisms and urbanisms. These concepts highlight the dialectical role of Pentecostalisms in the cosmopolitization of urban sociospatialities, and of urbanisms in the cosmopoli…
Identities, exclusionism and politics in Africa
In Africa, the youth play a major role both as activists and participants in cultural life and politics. Framed around the concepts of conservatisms and radicalisms, this special issue references various African contexts to explore the intersections of youthhood, identities, cultural practices, politics, struggle narratives, education, and marginalisation, and the role young people play in the political process. To this end, articles in this spec…
Politics and Community-Based Research
This book is a new and courageous examination of the complexity of embedded research. It is an honest and insightful reflection that ... challenges and deepens arguments around spaces of participation through theoretical reflection and, more centrally, through the actual experience of the embedded research of Yeoville Studio. It is an important work for this and other reasons
Ritualistic urbanism
This article deploys the concept of ritualistic urbanism to understand the production of everyday urban social regularity in multinationally diverse metropolises. The article mobilises ethnographic vignettes from Johannesburg in this regard. The study hypothesises that it is everyday ethno-mutualism, underpropped by layered everyday routines, rhythms and rituals, which can enable a sustainable economy of social order – arguably more than is possi…
Theo-urbanism
This article draws on Foucauldian analysis and ethnographic observations in a Pentecostal church in Johannesburg, to read how everyday urbanism is increasingly suffused with Pentecostal ‘pastoral power’. The article develops the idea of theo-urbanism to capture the inscription of religious, and specifically Pentecostal, ‘pastoral power’ into the intricacies of everyday urban political and socio-economic life. Attendant to the concept of theo-urba…
Mediated multinational urbanism
With increased international immigration, South African cities have come to contend with the threat of a violent multinational urbanism. Xenophobia, in its violent and symbolic manifestations, signifies this challenge. From an empirical grounding in Johannesburg, this paper explores the possibility of living together in contexts of multinational urbanism. It argues that strategic action and communicative action, in the Habermasian sense, are esse…
Ethnopolitics, Fear and Safety in a Johannesburg Neighbourhood
Community Leadership and the Construction of Political Legitimacy
Apart from local monographs and normative texts on community participation, research on community leadership constitutes a blind spot in urban leadership, urban politics, social movements and urban studies. This article, based on case studies in post-apartheid Johannesburg, contributes to theorizing community leadership, or informal local political leadership, by exploring Bourdieu's concepts of 'political capital' and 'double dealings'. Consider…
