This study focuses on highly skilled, low-paid workers in San Santiago, a pueblo in central Spain (population approximately 2,000), and its hinterland. The region is poor; infant mortality was high in the 1920s and 1930s, and in the 1950s and 1960s people left in large numbers for the more prosperous cities.'
