  • Reflections upon Discussions with Jacques Tixier

    Open Access•Christopher A Bergman, Christopher Bergman•ARTICLE•Litikum•2020

For me, I spent the years [1974][1975][1976][1977][1978][1979] as a student at the American University of Beirut, a direct witness to the horrific events of the Lebanese Civil War.This included sustaining shrapnel wounds from an 82 mm mortar round on the American University campus, the kidnapping and death of family and friends, and the ongoing daily destruction of the city. These memories have remained with me throughout my later years, but it wa…

  • Blade Technology in Clovis Assemblages in Kentucky

    Open Access•Crista M Haag, Christopher A Bergman et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2014•Citada por: 3•Referências: 17

During the Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic of the Old World, the use of blade and bladelet technology was widespread in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. In contrast to this situation, the use of elongated debitage in North America occurs relatively infrequently during the Pre-Clovis and Clovis periods. This article examines three assemblages from the Adams and Joe Priddy sites in Kentucky and the Nuckolls site in Tennessee, and notes possi…

  • Some Comments on Blade Technology and Eastern Clovis Lithic Reduction Strategies

    Kurt W Carr, Christopher A Bergman et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2010•Referências: 24

Blade/bladelet technology has been described as a highly efficient manner by which to produce stone tools, both tool blanks and finished forms. It was practiced during the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic (or Epipaleolithic) over vast portions of Europe, Asia, and Africa and it has also been ascribed to the Paleoindian Period for both Pre-Clovis and Clovis assemblages. However, the authors believe that in North America blade technology was relati…

  • Upper Paleolithic Levels XIII-VI (A and B) from the 1937-1938 and 1947-1948 Boston College Excavations and the Levantine Aurignacian at Ksar Akil, Lebanon

    John K Williams, Christopher A Bergman•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2010•Citada por: 38

The rockshelter of Ksar Akil in Lebanon witnessed the most prolonged occupation of any single location during the Levantine Upper Paleolithic. Investigations began at the site in the early 1920s and have spanned almost 90 years. This paper examines the upper portion of the stratigraphic sequence, including the Levantine Aurignacian, and for the first time, correlates data collected in both the 1937-1938 and 1947-1948 field seasons of Boston Colle…

  • Early Woodland Occupation of the Northern Bluegrass

    Open Access•Christopher A Bergman, Donald A Miller et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•1998•Citada por: 3

The West Runway site (15BE391) is located in an upland setting in Boone County, Kentucky. Excavations at this locality revealed intact Early Woodland deposits including pit features containing Fayette Thick ceramics and straight stemmed Kramer projectile points. Until these investigations, Fayette Thick ceramics had not previously been recovered from non-mound locations or in isolation within undisturbed feature contexts. Several radiocarbon dete…

  • An approach to the study of ancient archery using mathematical modelling

    Open Access•Bob W Kooi, Christopher A Bergman•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1997•Citada por: 5•Referências: 7

The archer's bow is a machine whose purpose is to impart stored energy effectively and accurately to propel the arrow. A mathematical modelling of different bow types shows how their engineering characteristics define their performances

  • The Development of the Bow in Western Europe

    Open Access•Christopher A Bergman•ARTICLE•Archeological Papers of the…•1993•Citada por: 8•Referências: 14

The development and use of archery equipment in prehistoric Europe has always stimulated archaeological interest. Much of the focus of research has been concerned with the temporal origins of the bow. Surviving examples of prehistoric bows and arrows make it possible to evaluate the functional capabilities of these weapons. Experimental replication of prehistoric European archery equipment shows that early bow and arrow designs were well engineer…

  • Fifty years after

    Christopher A Bergman, Christopher B Stringer•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1989•Citada por: 71

  • Flaking technology at the acheulean site of Boxgrove (West Sussex, England)

    Christopher A Bergman, Mark B Roberts•ARTICLE•Revue archéologique de Picardie•1988•Citada por: 17

The Acheulean site of Boxgrove, West Sussex, England, contains one of the largest areas of in situ Lower Palaeolithic deposits with both faunal and archaeological remains in Europe. This material is found in a complex series of Middle Pleistocene sediments which represent Marine depositional conditions at 42 m O.D. through to the onset of full periglacial conditions. The archaelogical material is primarily composed of ovate and limande bifaces wi…

  • Ksar Akil and the Upper Palaeolithic of the Levant

    Christopher A Bergman•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1988•Citada por: 33

Ancient collections from Ksar Akil, levels XXV-XVI (Transitional/early Upper Palaeolithic), XIII-VI (later Upper Palaeolithic) have been re-examined; the samples have enabled the author to give a techno-typological description of the industry and to present the main features of its evolution. This study permits to place Ksar Akil in relation to other Upper Palaeolithic sites in the Northern and Southern Levant. Ksar Akil is neither isolated or un…

  • Experimental archery

    Open Access•Christopher A Bergman, E Mcewen et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1988•Citada por: 24•Referências: 9

Experimental study with replica bows and projectiles of a variety of types indicates the superiority of archery over the throwing of spears, and makes it possible to indicate a hierarchy of increasing efficiency in the main classes of bows

  • Excavation of the Lower Palaeolithic Site at Amey's Eartham Pit, Boxgrove, West Sussex

Mark B Roberts, Martin Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1986•Citada por: 43•Referências: 10

The acheulian site at Boxgrove contains one of the most extensive areas of in situ fauna and flintwork yet discovered in Britain. This material is found in a complex sequence of sediments which represent depositional conditions from a 42 m sea level rise to the onset of a full periglacial climate. Excavation of the archaeological horizon has been accompanied by a programme of multidisciplinary research examining site formation processes, palaeola…

  • Experimental approaches to ancient near eastern archery

    R Miller, E Mcewen et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1986•Citada por: 24•Referências: 20

Replicas of ancient Near Eastern archery tackle can be used to investigate the performance of different types of bows. The velocity of projectiles from spear throwers, simple wooden bows and composite horn‐wood‐sinew bows shows a clear linear trend in increased efficiency. Mechanical properties of bow and arrow design and performance can be related to archaeological, art historical and textual sources for the use of archery in warfare
